Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Evan Payton! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of London, Jake Blade! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Jorge Garcia and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Payton tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Blade paws at him with a jab and circles away. And an attempted straight right on the counter from Blade! But no joy. Blade scores with a leg kick.
Nice shot by Payton. Payton throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Payton throws a predictable looking body shot
and Blade counters with a straight right hand. Payton throws a right and a left that Blade avoids nicely. It seemed like Blade was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. We've been hearing reports that Payton has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Blade throws a lazy right hand but Payton sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Payton is looking to counter punch. A jab lands there for Blade. Payton jabbing away but nothing is landing. Payton drives through with a takedown into guard. Blade has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Payton is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Blade struggles to land a body shot inside as Payton controls his hands.

Blade displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Payton throws out the jab. Blade lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Payton circles away quickly and effectively. Payton lands with an uppercut that bounces Blade off the cage and back into range. Blade fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Payton. Blade keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Payton. Payton throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Blade defending well as Payton loads up on a big left hand. Blade wants to counter with a clinch but Payton pushes him away. Payton pushes Blade up against the cage in a clinch. Payton misses with a short punch on the inside. Blade moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. Blade drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Payton misses with a double jab.
Payton closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Payton decides to return to a standing position. Payton checks a leg kick nicely. Blade takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Blade keeps the fight on the outside. Blade throws a nice looking combination but Payton bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Blade closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Blade controls the position. You can see the frustration on Payton's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Payton tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Blade wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Payton is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Payton tries to get to full guard but Blade has control of the leg. Payton controlling the position well. Blade prevents Payton from improving his position.

Blade is trying to control the action in half guard but Payton is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Payton has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Blade is working away from the top position though. Payton tries to roll over but Blade keeps him under control. Payton is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Blade pulls his head out easily. Payton is trying to maintain the position but Blade is very close to passing his half guard. Payton wants to get back to full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Blade wants to advance to full mount but Payton doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Payton might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Payton wants to sweep here but Blade controlling him for the moment. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Payton is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Payton is looking for a triangle but Blade pushes his legs off easily.

That was a close round but I would say that Evan Payton will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Payton clinches. Payton has picked Blade up - he's going for a ride! Payton dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. Blade has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Payton is working away from the top position though. Blade desperately trying to maintain half guard. Payton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Blade defends it well. Blade is looking to escape. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Payton is looking to take a break and control but Blade is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Payton looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Payton throws the left hand but Blade avoids the punch easily. Payton chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Blade can pounce on him.
Payton closes the distance and pushes Blade back into the cage. Blade scores with a shoulder strike. Blade prevents a body shot from Payton. Payton tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Blade's elbow. Blade can't find room to land a body shot as Payton controls the action.
Payton gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Payton trying to control the position from guard on top but Blade is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Payton passes easily into side control. Nice work. Blade is looking to regain half guard here but Payton keeps moving and retains side control.

Payton is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Blade is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Payton tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Payton has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Payton is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Blade has escaped the position, nice work there. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Blade wants to control but Payton postures up. Blade lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Blade throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Payton half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Payton connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Blade ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A jab from Payton misses. Payton scores with a jab to the body. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Payton tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Blade manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Blade slips a straight right by Payton. Payton thuds his right hand into Blade's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Nice shot by Payton. Blade misses the jab. Payton throws a big counter combination but Blade scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage. Payton ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. A swing and a miss from Payton. The fight moves into the clinch position. Payton looking for a takedown. Blade bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Payton's head. Payton shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Blade as he avoids it easily. Payton tries to close the distance and clinch up but Blade swats him away and circles back towards the center. Blade fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Blade rushes Payton and presses him up against the cage. Blade misses with some punches.
