Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Conor Mcgregor! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jon Paul! The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Anni Minnemäki and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paul is looking to slow Mcgregor down with leg kicks. Mcgregor seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym. Mcgregor throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Paul takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Paul plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! A punch combination from Mcgregor misses. Mcgregor swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Mcgregor scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Mcgregor feints a jab promting Paul to slip. Mcgregor then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Paul slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Paul slips a jab and a cross from Mcgregor.
Paul fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mcgregor sprawls well initially but Paul persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Paul is trying to control. Mcgregor wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Mcgregor wants to get back to his feet.
Mcgregor knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Paul on the ground. Paul postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Mcgregor to stand up. Mcgregor on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Paul clinches up against the cage. Paul breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Paul gets in close and instigates a clinch. Mcgregor avoiding damage as Paul throws knees to the body.
Paul pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Paul has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Mcgregor scores with a nice right hand.
Paul is rocked! Mcgregor steps into range and unloads a brutal right left combo! Paul is out on his feet! Mcgregor sets himself and nearly takes Paul's head off with a straight right, sending him crashing to the mat! Wow, that was nasty... but awesome! Wooo!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:05 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Conor Mcgregor! After the fight, Conor Mcgregor was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
