The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Carpenter wants to clinch up but Marshall keeps it at a distance. Marshall swats away the attempt to clinch by Carpenter. Jimmy Carpenter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Carpenter fails in his attempt to clinch. Marshall stuffs the takedown attempt from Carpenter. Carpenter gets slowly back to his feet. Marshall shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Carpenter counters with a three punch combo that has Marshall backing up. Marshall nods at Carpenter to acknowledge the strikes. Carpenter tries to clinch up but Marshall circles away and keeps his distance. Carpenter tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Marshall tries for a takedown but Carpenter circles away easily and Carpenter counters with a nice uppercut. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Carpenter scores with a one two! Marshall had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.

Marshall is breathing heavily. Marshall looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Carpenter has picked Marshall up and slammed him! Marshall can't keep hold of the triangle and Carpenter manages to pass to side control! Carpenter taking a breather here. Jimmy Carpenter overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Marshall tries to buck Carpenter off but Carpenter is having none of it. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Marshall throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Carpenter escapes and throws Marshall's legs to the side, diving into side control! Marshall takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The ground and pound from Carpenter seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Marshall tries to buck Carpenter off but Carpenter is having none of it. Carpenter decides to take the fight back to the feet. Carpenter swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Carpenter is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Marshall can do to turn this around? Carpenter tries to clinch but Marshall moves out of range. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Carpenter is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Marshall has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Marshall has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Carpenter clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Carpenter is trying to get back to his feet. He's worked up on to his knees and now he's on his feet with his head on the canvas, trying to shake Marshall off. It looks like it's working - Marshall slides off, much to his dismay, and we're back to standing! Carpenter displaying calm under pressure there. Carpenter tries to clinch up but Marshall circles away and keeps his distance. Jimmy Carpenter is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Carpenter! You can see the frustration on Marshall's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Carpenter stands up and beckons Marshall to his feet.

Marshall tries to roll over but Carpenter keeps him under control. Marshall looking for submissions from an awkward position here. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Carpenter is keen to just control but Marshall is a slippery customer. Marshall is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Carpenter pulls his head out easily.

Marshall has a hand on Carpenter's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Carpenter takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Marshall is working to get back to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Marshall is trying to reverse the position but instead Carpenter has taken his back - oops! Carpenter has Marshall flattened out and is raining down punches. I really don't envy Marshall right now.
Marshall is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Will Carpenter go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
