PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Lasse Kongo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Michio Suzuki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Michio Suzuki told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Lasse Kongo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Michio Suzuki! The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Tarja Halkonen and Anni Minnemäki.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kongo rushes Suzuki and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch. Kongo looking to stall.
Suzuki fails to pull guard.
Suzuki breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. A decent looking cross lands there for Suzuki. Nice shot lands for Suzuki.
It looks like Lasse Kongo has been cut. Suzuki closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Suzuki looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kongo with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Suzuki has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Suzuki winds up and cracks Kongo with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Kongo trying to control here.
Suzuki takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Kongo flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Suzuki working over Kongo with some ground and pound. Kongo looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Suzuki not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Suzuki seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Suzuki lands with a punch from half guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Suzuki sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kongo defending well though. Kongo is trying to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kongo slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Suzuki landing with the ground and pound. Suzuki is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Kongo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Suzuki lands a couple of digs. Suzuki passes Kongo's left leg - he's now in half guard. Suzuki working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Suzuki is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Kongo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Kongo is breathing heavily. Suzuki is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kongo defends it well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Kongo is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Kongo wants to get back to full guard but Suzuki has passed into side control. Suzuki breaks from Kongo's wrist control and lands an elbow. Suzuki scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Kongo can't escape the position.
Kongo tries to lock up and control but Suzuki gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Suzuki raining down shots from the mount! Suzuki pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Suzuki with the ground and pound from mount. Kongo wants to control but Suzuki is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Suzuki lands with some strikes.
Kongo is rocked! Suzuki working Kongo over with strikes here. Oh Kongo is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Suzuki postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Kongo in real trouble here! The ref calls for Kongo to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:31 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Michio Suzuki!
