PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mallador Locke (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bryan Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bryan Paul will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mallador Locke!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bryan Paul!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Locke throws an off balance right hand
and Paul counters with a nice uppercut.
Locke shoots for a double leg takedown but Paul sprawls well. He's pushed Locke's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Paul connects with a right hand. Locke shakes it off.
Locke takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Locke throws an off balance right hand
and Paul counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Locke swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Mallador Locke seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Locke changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Paul looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Locke tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Locke has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Paul avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Locke.
Locke postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Locke working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Locke lands a few punches from side control.
Locke trying to control the position but Paul is working away.
You can see the frustration on Paul's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Locke tries to score with some ground and pound. Paul controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Paul wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Paul is working to avoid the ground and pound but Locke connects with a decent elbow.
Locke looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Paul is avoiding damage well.

Locke tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Locke has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Locke wants to lay and pray for a moment but Paul keeps working.

Locke is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Paul is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Locke has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Locke wants to control but Paul is keeping him busy.
Locke throws an elbow but Paul slips to the side and avoids it well.
Paul is looking for a sweep.

Paul wants to get back to his feet but Locke drags him back down.

Locke is looking to take a break and control but Paul is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Locke is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Paul defends it well.
Locke wants to free his trapped foot but Paul is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Paul is trying to stand up here but Locke is controlling him well.

Locke seems to be working for a kimura but Paul defends the submission attempt.

Paul is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Locke throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Locke misses with an uppercut
and Paul counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Locke dives in and grabs Paul's left leg, looking for a takedown. Paul pushes down on Locke's head and hops out.

Locke shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Locke showed some decent athleticism there.
Locke thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Paul's head.
Locke not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Paul wants to control but Locke is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Locke thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Locke trying to mount his opponent but Paul defends it.
Paul pushes Locke off looking to stand but Locke dives back in and keeps control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Paul is defending against the submission attempts here by Locke.
Paul wants to control but Locke is keeping busy.

Locke wants to lay and pray for a moment but Paul keeps working.
Paul keeping hold of Locke's head, controlling as best he can.

Paul is looking for a sweep. Locke is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Paul is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Locke's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Locke's back!

Mallador Locke overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Paul can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Locke is looking to escape.
Paul throwing strikes here but Locke is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Paul looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Locke is desperately trying to improve his position but Paul has a good base and remains in mount.

Locke wants to hold on but Paul pushes him away.
Locke is in all sorts of trouble here.

Locke is refusing to be controlled, as Paul sits in half guard.
Locke wants to control but Paul is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Locke looking for a sweep. Not yet Locke, not yet.

Paul wanted to stand there but Locke had control of the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bryan Paul showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Locke thows a left - swing and a miss!
Paul cracks Locke with an open hand slap.
Paul scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
Locke is looking to land body kicks.
Locke backing away here, and Paul unleashes a leg kick that just misses.
Locke throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Nice straight punches there by Paul. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Paul.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Locke.
It seemed like Paul was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Locke closes this distance looking for a takedown but Paul circles away.
Paul wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Locke swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Paul scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Paul lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Bryan Paul seems to be getting the better of the standup.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Paul works Locke's body with a nice hook.
Paul connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Paul has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off.

Locke takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Locke throws a hook but Paul blocks it.
Locke throws a leg kick
and Paul counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Paul throws out a powerful jab.

Locke closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Locke lands in his opponent's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Locke drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Paul dives on top into guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Paul wants to stand but Locke is controlling his posture from full guard.

Locke avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Locke can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Paul controls the pace.
Locke trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Paul postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Paul wants to control from the top but Locke keeps moving.

Locke keeping moving, preventing Paul from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Locke throws a looping overhand right but Paul ducks down to avoid it.
Locke looks for the body kick but Paul saw that one coming.
Paul was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Bryan Paul is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Locke lands with a cross.


It looks like Bryan Paul has been cut.
Paul lands with a good body shot.
Paul connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Paul lands with a right hand.
Paul throws a front kick that sends Locke stumbling back into the cage.
Locke misses with a straight left.
Locke throws a body punch but Paul moves out of range.
Locke shoots in looking for a takedown but Paul manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Locke's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mallador Locke. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Locke shoots in for a double leg but Paul sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Paul uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Locke.
Locke shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Paul counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Paul connects with a jab.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Paul lands with a nice combination. Locke backs away looking to recover.
Paul has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Locke throws a jab when Paul was well out of range.
Paul feints a jab promting Locke to slip. Paul then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Locke slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Locke fails with the takedown.
Paul throws out a counter right but Locke avoids it with no problem.
Paul lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Locke looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Locke is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Paul's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
A cross from Paul lands.
Paul buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Locke fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Paul avoids it really well and circles away.
Paul appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
Bryan Paul comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Paul has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
