The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ryan shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Rainier pinned against the cage. Rainier gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Rainier fails to land with a series of punches.
Rainier misses with a double jab.
Nice sprawl there from Rainier as Ryan shoots in. Ryan tries for a takedown but Rainier sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Kyle Rainier has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Ryan. Ryan showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Rainier.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Ryan drives through with a takedown into guard. Ryan won't allow Rainier to get back to his feet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ryan has gone for a leg lock! Rainier slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ryan's guard. Rainier lands a nice looking body kick. Ryan closes the distance and clinches up with Rainier, looking for a takedown. Ryan pushes Rainier against the cage but Rainier circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Rainier shoots in but Ryan avoids the takedown attempt easily. Rainier closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Rainier lands in his opponent's guard.

If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Rainier wants to stand up but Ryan is controlling the position.

Rainier really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. Ryan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Rainier counters with a nice uppercut. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kyle Rainier dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Rainier is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Rainier misses with a takedown and Ryan counters with a shoot takedown. Rainier fights it but they end up in guard. Ryan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rainier manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Ryan has Rainier in his guard. Ryan has his foot on Rainier's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Rainier works his way back into a safe position though. Ryan had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Rainier is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Ryan Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Rainier's back instead. Ryan looking to break Rainier's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Rainier remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Ryan will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Ryan looking for the RNC. Rainier is trying to get back to his feet but Ryan has full control of the position and if anything, Rainier has just worked his way into a worse spot.

Rainier tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell! Rainier gets back to half guard. Ryan is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rainier is just riding it out for now. Ryan eventually gives up the hold. Ryan is looking for a kimura but Rainier is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Ryan to get the leverage. Rainier gets full guard. That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Ryan is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Ryan postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Rainier is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Ryan, into his guard. Rainier slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Ryan is looking for a sweep. Rainier decides to take the fight back to the feet. Ryan shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Rainier counters with a nice double leg into guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rainier works a leg free and moves into half guard. Rainier prevents Ryan from improving his position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Ryan can do anything to dispel that myth. Rainier drops an elbow to the side of Ryan's head. Ryan looking for submissions from an awkward position here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Crunch! Rainier slams his shin into Ryan's torso. Ryan fails with the takedown letting Rainier counter with a right hand. Kyle Rainier is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Rainier drives through and clinches with Ryan against the cage.

Rainier tries to bum rush Ryan with a series of wild strikes but Ryan uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Rainier darts in trying to clinch and Ryan counters with a shoot takedown. Rainier fights it but they end up in guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ryan trying to stand up but can't free himself from Rainier's guard. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Rainier is on top in guard.

Ryan fails with the takedown and Rainier counters with a body kick that stops Ryan in his tracks momentarily. Rainier is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Kyle Rainier is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Rainier keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Ryan's head.
