PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Tony Ferg (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Harry James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tony Ferg!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Harry James!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
James closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Harry James seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
James scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Ferg gets tackled into the cage by James. James maintains the clinch.

Ferg breaks the clinch.
James tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Ferg defends well and James ends up having to push Ferg into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
It looked like Ferg wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
James slips under a jab.
James darts in looking for a takedown but Ferg gets double underhooks and turns James into the cage.
Tony Ferg has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Harry James.
James takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Ferg misses with an uppercut. James saw that one coming.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

James scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Ferg knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for James on the ground.
James wants to stand up but Ferg has a hold of him and won't allow it.

James looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Ferg is trying to stand up here but James is controlling him well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Ferg is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Ferg wants to control but James is keeping busy.
James content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

James gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Ferg looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Ferg tries to circle away but James has him pinned against the cage.
Ferg wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but James has him pressed against the cage.
Ferg has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
James keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Ferg's efforts to push away.
James keeps control of Ferg as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

James manages to break the clinch.
James tries a head kick but it misses.
James keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Ferg.

Ferg looks to land a left hand but James moved out of range nicely.
Ferg slips a jab and a cross from James.
A little feinted left hand from Ferg on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
James tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Ferg swivels and escapes.
Ferg went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
James fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

James gets a clinch.

James manages to pull guard.
James managing to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
James trying to keep a closed guard but Ferg is proving a slippery customer.
Ferg has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
James is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Ferg stands up from guard. Let's bang!
James's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and James duly obliges.
Ferg pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Harry James dominated that round.
That's time! Ferg's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Ferg.
James has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

James looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
James uses his free foot to push down on Ferg's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Ferg.

James trying to control but Ferg is having none of it.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James throwing strikes here but Ferg is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

Ferg wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by James.
James looking to finish Ferg with some ground and pound. This is bad for Ferg!
James controlling the position easily from mount.
Ferg is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
James looking to control and managing it successfully.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
James lands a heavy elbow.
James content just to control the position here.
Ferg is trying to reverse the position but instead James has taken his back - oops!
James lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
A bit of a pause in the action here. James controlling the positon.
Let's hope that James has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

James lands an elbow to the side of the head.
James slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Ferg wants to control his opponent's hands but James gets his hands free.
James controlling well, preventing Ferg from escaping the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
James keeps control of the position easily here as Ferg tries to buck him off.
Ferg wants to escape the position.
Good control from James.

James looking for the choke from the back.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
James trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Ferg doesn't escape.
James has the hooks in. Ferg is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Harry James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


No luck for James with that takedown attempt.
Harry James is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Ferg throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Ferg throws a half hearted mid kick.

James closes the distance and clinches.
James throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Ferg blocks it with crossed arms.

James pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Ferg shoots in looking for a takedown but James manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Ferg's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
James is looking for the big counter here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
James shoots for a double leg takedown but Ferg sprawls well. He's pushed James's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

James has managed to clinch.
Ferg trying to control the position but instead, James has worked for underhooks and has pushed Ferg into the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
James lands a left hand.
Ferg stops a takedown attempt from James.
Tony Ferg has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Harry James.
Ferg wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
James has Ferg pressed against the cage, preventing Ferg from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Ferg looks for the body kick but James saw that one coming.
James dives in for a single leg takedown but Ferg sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Ferg is looking for a takedown.
James prevents the takedown attempt.

James works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
James takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
James is working Ferg over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Ferg is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Harry James has got the better of the ground game so far.
James not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Ferg on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ferg tries to get out of the position.
James wants to pass the guard but Ferg is keeping the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Ferg throws a body kick that misses.
No luck for James with that takedown attempt.
James will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Ferg wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
James with a poor takedown
and James takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
James tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Ferg counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Ferg lands with an overhand left.
Ferg fakes high and swings low for a body shot but James manages to avoid it.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
James is trying hard to land a takedown here. Ferg sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
It appears Ferg was looking to counter with a kick there.
James connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Ferg momentarily.
Tony Ferg has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Harry James is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Ferg looks to throw the jab but James is out of range.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Tony Ferg.
I think James has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
