PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kelly Sears (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ares Grego (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kelly Sears!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Ares Grego!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Paul Gruel and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grego misses with a wild combination.

Grego shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sears manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Grego wants to control from the top but Sears keeps moving.
Grego passes Sears's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Grego is taking a breather. Sears says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sears wants to get back to full guard.
Sears won't allow Grego to pass to mount.
Grego wants to stand up but Sears is controlling the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Grego is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Sears keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Sears controlling the position for now.
Sears is looking for a sweep. Grego is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Sears wants to control but Grego is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Grego looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Sears moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Sears lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sears loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Grego is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Sears is fighting to break Grego's control of his arms but Grego is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Sears is looking to work some ground and pound but Grego has wrist control.
Sears postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sears throws a big elbow that misses.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Ares Grego seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Grego looking to score a takedown here. Sears is defending well but Grego drives through and ends up in Sears's guard.

Sears has his feet on Grego's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Grego drives through with a takedown into guard.
Grego not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Sears has Grego pulled in close to control his posture.
Grego trying to control but Sears is working from the bottom.
Grego sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Sears wants to stand and escape but Grego is having none of it.
Grego wants to control from the top but Sears keeps moving.
Grego content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Grego loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sears is wriggling around but Grego manages to pass to half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Grego content to control rather than advance.
Grego throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ares Grego dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Grego has Sears up against the cage in a clinch.
Grego blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Sears looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Grego gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Sears trying to hold on to Grego's head to control him but Grego postures up.
Sears is looking to escape.
Grego missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sears controlling the position well.

Grego escapes and gets back to his feet.
Sears gets caught by a brutal right hook which buckles his knees! Sears tries to backpedal with his spaghettilegs but Grego is headhunting and goes for the kill. A jab and a right hook connect and Sears buckles badly as his eyes roll back. The referee steps in and saves Sears!! Sears is complaining but he was clearly out on his feet. Grego throws his mouthpiece into the crowd. Mmmm spit-tastic.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ares Grego!
