PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Nathan Wallace (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Hess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Nathan Wallace!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Tom Hess!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Dean Styles and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hess fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Hess misses with a kick to the body.
Hess misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Wallace throwing a counter right hand but Hess manages to avoid it.
Good leg kick by Wallace there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Hess moves out of range of the strikes.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wallace feints and then cracks Hess's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Hess down.
Hess on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Wallace. Wallace obviously looking to wear him down.
We've been told by Wallace's head coaches at Gym Beam that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Wallace scores with a jab. Hess acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Wallace throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hess.

Wallace swings for the body but Hess moves out of range.
Hess finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Hess moves out of range of the strikes.
Wallace tries a low kick but Hess avoids it.
Hess fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Nathan Wallace has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tom Hess.
Hess has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Wallace.

Wallace scores with an uppercut up the middle.

Hess ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Hess no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Hess looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Hess is looking for a triangle but Wallace pushes his legs off easily.

Wallace got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hess has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wallace has managed to get both his arms back between Hess's legs - danger averted.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hess can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Wallace controls the pace.

Hess looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Wallace slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Hess is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wallace is aware though and is defending well.

Hess looking for a guillotine here but Wallace defends easily.

Hess looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Wallace passes into side control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Wallace tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Hess is able to avoid easily.
Hess tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

Wallace lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Hess throws a poor cross that misses
and Wallace cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Hess displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Wallace throws out the jab.
Hess is trying hard to land a takedown here. Wallace sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Horrible takedown attempt by Hess or perhaps it was just good defense by Wallace, which made it look bad.
A quick step to the side and Wallace tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Wallace fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Hess.

and Hess counters with a shoot takedown. Wallace fights it but they end up in guard.

Hess drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Wallace manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Hess has Wallace in his guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Hess is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Wallace stands and steps away. Hess gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Hess.

Hess on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Wallace is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.

Hess shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Hess showed some decent athleticism there.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Wallace swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.

Wallace gets caught napping as Hess dives in and scores a takedown. Wallace manages to retain guard.

Wallace has his feet on Hess's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Wallace uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
Wallace throws a body shot but no joy.

That kick from Wallace tenderised Hess's leg. Hess is trying to keep his angry face on.
Hess walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Wallace checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.
Hess shoots in for a takedown but Wallace shows good takedown defense.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Hess is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.
Hess walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Wallace is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hess can do to turn this around?

Hess tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Wallace defends well and Hess ends up having to push Wallace into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Wallace will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Hess is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Hess is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Wallace is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Wallace has escaped and now he's on top!

Hess is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Wallace is aware though and is defending well.
Wallace has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Hess is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Hess seems to be working for a kimura but Wallace defends the submission attempt.

Hess is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Wallace sees it coming and defends easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Hess postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Wallace is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Hess, into his guard.


And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Wallace, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
