Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Anthony Pettis! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
18 - 28 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Daniello Pablo! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Edson Gomes and Matheus Silva.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pablo fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Pablo shoots for a takedown but Pettis saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Pettis attempts a low kick but it misses it's target. Pablo closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pettis circles away. Anthony Pettis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniello Pablo. Pablo shoots in but no luck this time. Pablo gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pettis to score an easy takedown into full guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Pablo working for a triangle but Pettis defends it easily.

Pettis tries to pass the half guard into mount. Pablo knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Pettis thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pablo's head. Pettis landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Pablo wants to get back to full guard. Pettis sitting and controlling from the half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pablo is pressing down on Pettis's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Pablo keeping moving, preventing Pettis from controlling successfully. Pettis passes easily into side control. Nice work. Pablo tries to buck Pettis off but Pettis is having none of it. Pablo seems a little lost for a moment, as Pettis dominates the positioning. Pablo avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Pettis. Pablo parries the strikes from Pettis easily there. Pettis is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Pablo to escape.

Pettis throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Pablo because Pettis loaded up on that one. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Pablo holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Pettis tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Pettis gets a takedown into half guard. Pablo has one foot on Pettis's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Nice sprawl there from Pettis as Pablo shoots in. Pettis closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Pettis lands in his opponent's guard. Pablo scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Pablo lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Pettis circles away quickly and effectively. Pettis tried to counter with a leg kick but Pablo avoided it. Pablo fails to land the takedown. A combination from Pablo does no damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pablo tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Daniello Pablo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Pablo misses with a takedown and Pettis counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Anthony Pettis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Daniello Pablo. Some bone on bone action there as Pablo checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one. It seemed like Pablo was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it. Pablo gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pettis sitting in guard here, content to control. Pettis wants to control from the top but Pablo keeps moving. Pablo is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Pettis is controlling him. Pettis postures up in Pablo's guard and throws a big left but Pablo blocks it.

Anthony Pettis overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Pettis works over Pablo with some ground and pound from guard. Pettis stopping the sweep attempt from Pablo. Pettis controls from within his opponent's guard. Pettis is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pablo can do to turn this around? Pettis avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Pablo is working Pettis over with some ground and pound from side control. My spies in Barbell Brigade - $1000 inform me that Pablo has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Pablo lands a nice short elbow. Pettis wants to improve his position but Pablo is controlling well.

Pablo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Pablo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Pettis ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Pablo looking to score a takedown here. Pettis is defending well but Pablo drives through and ends up in Pettis's guard. Pettis has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Pablo has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage. Pettis pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Pablo looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Pettis! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Pablo scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Pettis to see if he's OK. Pablo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pettis knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Pettis is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Both of our modern day gladiators look out of it here - a gruelling 5 rounds of action taking it's toll on them, no doubt.
