PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Volya Nikolaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Karter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Nikolaev might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Fever . I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Chris Karter was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 29 - 23 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Volya Nikolaev!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 5 - 2, fighting out of New York, Chris Karter!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Daniel Bishop and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nikolaev darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Nikolaev shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Karter is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Nice jab there from Nikolaev.
Karter misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Nikolaev.
Karter looks for the body kick but Nikolaev saw that one coming.
Nikolaev half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Nikolaev throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Karter raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Karter throws a shot from downtown. Nikolaev moves away and avoids it.
Nikolaev swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Karter keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Karter throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nikolaev throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Karter stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Nikolaev shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Karter but Karter pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Nikolaev tests Karter's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Karter lands with a shot to the body.
Karter throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Nikolaev on the side of the head.
Karter lands a really nice looking cross but Nikolaev seems unphased.


Nikolaev is rocked!
Chris Karter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No joy there for Nikolaev, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nikolaev missing with a left hand there. Karter was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Nikolaev lands with a cross.
Karter pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Nikolaev appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Nikolaev throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Karter throws a leg kick but Nikolaev sees it coming and moves out of range.

Karter lands a nice shot to the body.

Nikolaev lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Karter backs up against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Karter slips a straight right by Nikolaev.
Despite the aggression on Karter's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Karter pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Karter throws a body shot but no joy.
Nikolaev blocks a leg kick.
Nikolaev misses with a hook
and Karter counters with a right hand to the body.
Nikolaev throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Karter clobbers Nikolaev with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Nikolaev on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere.
Nikolaev throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Karter sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Karter showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Nikolaev.
Nikolaev throws a big shot that misses.
Karter throws a sloppy head kick and Nikolaev moves out of range easily.
Nikolaev appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Karter lands a jab to Nikolaev's midsection.
Karter buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Karter swings for the body but Nikolaev moves out of range.
Nikolaev misses with a looping right.
Nikolaev misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Volya Nikolaev. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Nikolaev loads up on a big right hand but Karter slips the punch.
Karter ducks under a wild hook from Nikolaev.
Karter lands a jab to the head.

Nikolaev gets a takedown into half guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Nikolaev thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Karter's head.
Nikolaev thows a huge punch but Karter dodges it nicely.
Karter is trying is best to control the position here.
Well, if Nikolaev is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Chris Karter will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Nikolaev throws a right hand that Karter ducks under and follows up with a left that Karter also avoids with ease.
Karter is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Nikolaev with a body shot.
Karter lands a leg kick that knocks Nikolaev off balance momentarily.
Nikolaev takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Karter throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Karter misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Karter scores with a hook.
Nikolaev misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Nikolaev avoids the body shot from Karter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Karter digs a good body shot into Nikolaev's ribs.

Nikolaev feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Karter utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Nikolaev is looking to work some ground and pound but Karter has wrist control.
Karter is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Karter keeping moving, preventing Nikolaev from controlling successfully.
Karter avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Nikolaev wants to control from the top but Karter keeps moving.
Nikolaev stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Karter swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nikolaev postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Karter pulls Nikolaev in to control the position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Chris Karter seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Nikolaev stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Karter.
Nikolaev lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Nikolaev.
Nikolaev tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Karter defends well and Nikolaev ends up having to push Karter into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Some bone on bone action there as Nikolaev checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Karter lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Nikolaev at a distance.
Chris Karter is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Karter connects with a good right hand that stumbles Nikolaev. Nikolaev circles away out of range and recomposes himself.
Karter misses the jab.

A looping hook to the body misses from Karter. Nikolaev does a little dance to reset his feet.

A big right from Karter misses.

Nikolaev fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Karter sprawls well initially but Nikolaev persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Nikolaev seems to be working for a kimura but Karter defends the submission attempt.
Nikolaev is just content to waste time from the top position. Karter takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Nikolaev thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Karter's head.

Nikolaev wants to control but Karter is keeping him busy.

Nikolaev is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Karter is looking for a sweep. Nikolaev is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

That was a close second round but I would say that Volya Nikolaev will probably get the nod.

Nikolaev shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Karter napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Karter manages to get back to half guard.
Nikolaev throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Nikolaev stalling away here and it's allowed Karter to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nikolaev working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Nikolaev wants to control from the top but Karter keeps moving.
Volya Nikolaev overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Nikolaev distracts Karter with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Nikolaev has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Nikolaev can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Karter is looking to escape.

Nikolaev lands a big elbow.
Karter tries to reverse the position but Nikolaev maintains control.
Nikolaev postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Karter looks a forlorn figure.
Karter slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Karter keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

And that's the end of the fight!
Volya Nikolaev showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Nikolaev has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
