Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ricky Steamboat! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
18 - 18 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carl Gustav! The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gustav lands with a hook. Steamboat tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Steamboat has a takedown stuffed. Steamboat with a lazy takedown attempt and Gustav counters with a right hand to the body. Steamboat keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Gustav. We've been informed that Gustav has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Steamboat walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head. Steamboat's corner calls for a 1-2. Steamboat obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Gustav misses the jab. Steamboat misses with a takedown attempt and Gustav counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ricky Steamboat. That's going to take a lot out of him. Gustav defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Steamboat. Gustav ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Steamboat moves away. Danga de danga de dang - Steamboat scores with a four punch combination! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gustav scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Steamboat doesn't seem bothered though. Gustav darts in and out, connecting with a jab. Steamboat shoots and misses and Steamboat takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Steamboat gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily letting Gustav counter with a right hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gustav's jab looks to have found its range, popping Steamboat under the eye. Steamboat with a poor takedown letting Gustav counter with a right hand. Steamboat goes for a double leg but Gustav avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Gustav continues to drive forward. Gustav lands a nice shot to the body.
Gustav is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Steamboat had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. Steamboat is breathing heavily. Gustav fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. Steamboat shoots in but doesn't get the takedown enabling Gustav to counter with a crisp jab. Gustav lands a jab to the nose. Steamboat fails with the takedown and Gustav counters with a straight right hand. Gustav scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Steamboat doesn't seem bothered though. A jab from Gustav does it's job there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. This has been an exciting period of action! Steamboat takes a shot right to the bread basket. Steamboat walks into a left hand. Steamboat is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Gustav's half guard. Steamboat not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Steamboat sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Gustav defending well though. Steamboat thows a huge punch but Gustav dodges it nicely.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gustav can do anything to dispel that myth. Gustav wants to improve his position but Steamboat is controlling well.
Steamboat throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Gustav is in trouble now - Steamboat has advanced to mount! Steamboat throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Poor strikes thrown by Steamboat there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Gustav tries to hold on but Steamboat pushes him away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Steamboat lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Steamboat throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Gustav manages to control the position for a moment. Steamboat working Gustav over with strikes here. The referee warns Gustav that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Steamboat putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound! Gustav taking shots to the head. Steamboat dominating with strikes here.
Gustav is rocked! Steamboat connects with a bit shot that sees Gustav covering up! More strikes from Steamboat and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Steamboat is our winner by TKO!
