PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Earle Gardner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mr Sam (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Earle Gardner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mr Sam!
The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, John Mangel and Donatello Bradman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sam closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Gardner is trying to control but can't.
Sam is keen to just control but Gardner is a slippery customer.
Gardner preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
Gardner has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Gardner wants to control but Sam is keeping busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sam looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Gardner trying to control from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sam winds up and cracks Gardner with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Sam closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gardner to the mat! Gardner manages to get full guard.
Sam passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Sam is staying tight to Gardner's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Gardner is trying to get back to half guard.
Sam tries to get to his feet but Gardner is in the middle of advancing position himself and ends up with Sam in his guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sam lands a couple of elbows.
Sam with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Gardner trying to control the position.

Gardner keeping moving, preventing Sam from controlling successfully.
Sam wants to get up but he can't break Gardner's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Sam postures up and lands a big shot to Gardner's brow.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Sam tries to free his leg and advance position but Gardner is retaining full guard.

Gardner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Sam scoring with punches to the head and body.
Sam engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sam accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sam is looking to stand up but Gardner won't let him.
Sam pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gardner is keeping the position for now.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mr Sam dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Sam drives through with a takedown into Gardner's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Sam's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Sam throws a big right hand that misses.
Gardner avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Sam trying to control but Gardner is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sam is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Gardner holds on and takes a little breather.
Sam looking to sit in guard and control but Gardner gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Gardner is looking to advance position but Sam has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Sam trying to control but Gardner is having none of it.
Sam might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Gardner haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Sam is continuing to stall.
Mr Sam has got the better of the ground game so far.
Gardner tries to hold on but Sam postures up.
Gardner blocking the ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sam looking to control and managing it successfully.
Sam wants to control the pace but Gardner is squirming around nicely.
Gardner is trying to escape the mount.
Sam takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Mr Sam showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!

Sam not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Sam is looking to stand up but Gardner won't let him.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Sam throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gardner was covering up waiting for the punch and Sam finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sam showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
Sam has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Sam wants to get up but he can't break Gardner's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Sam not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Sam has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gardner is proving hard to escape from.
Sam trying to control the position from guard on top but Gardner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sam stays in close to Gardner's body and controls the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Gardner avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Sam has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Gardner.
Gardner circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gardner throws a big counter combination but Sam scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Sam tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Gardner manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
It looked like Gardner was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Sam has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Sam tries to land a knee to the head but Gardner blocks with his arms.
Sam misses with some punches.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Sam has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Gardner regains guard immediately.

Sam wanted to stand there but Gardner had control of the position.

Gardner has Sam pulled in close to control his posture.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mr Sam comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Sam winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
