Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dave Monson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Marcus Licinius! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Roosa Järviläinen and Anni Minnemäki.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Monson thumps Licinius with a low kick. Monson delivers a nice body kick. Monson thuds his shin into the meat of Licinius's side. Monson bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Monson has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Monson lands an overhand right. Licinius connects with a body shot. Monson fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Licinius. Licinius chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Monson can pounce on him.
Monson throws a nice inside leg kick. Licinius is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Monson. Licinius stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Monson. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Licinius on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Monson. Monson obviously looking to wear him down.
Good leg kick by Monson there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
That's one minute gone in the round. Licinius steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Monson. That one must have hurt. Licinius stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Licinius wants it to stay on the feet. Licinius now looks to counter with a shot at the body. Licinius takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. Marcus Licinius is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. That's a knee to de groin and it's over and out! Licinius crumples to the ground after an illegal strike from Monson - the referee stops the clock and Licinius gets 5 minutes to recover from that one. "I'm sorry" says Monson. Licinius manages to get back to his feet and the fight resumes. Monson shoots in and bounces Licinius off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Monson won't allow Licinius to get back to his feet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Licinius scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Monson connects with an inside leg kick. Licinius has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Monson. Monson throws a shot from downtown. Licinius moves away and avoids it. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Monson bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Monson lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Monson bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Monson is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Licinius is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Licinius tries to escape but Monson is in control. Monson thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Monson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Licinius keeps working. Monson controlling the position. Monson is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Licinius knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Monson has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Licinius is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Monson yanks on the arm and Licinius is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Monson.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Dave Monson! Our winner, Dave Monson, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
