PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Manual Sloan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Watten (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mark Watten told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Manual Sloan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mark Watten !
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Donatello Bradman and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Watten lands a glancing blow to the side of Sloan's head.


Manual Sloan's cut is getting worse.
Mark Watten seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Watten sizes up Sloan with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle.

Watten looking to score a takedown here. Sloan is defending well but Watten drives through and ends up in Sloan's guard.

Manual Sloan's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
A lazy body kick from Sloan

and Watten counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Sloan wants a takedown.
Sloan drops down looking for an ankle pick but Watten pulls his leg out and moves away.
Watten throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Watten looks to land a body kick but Sloan moved away.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Watten .

Watten drives through and clinches with Sloan against the cage.
Watten stalling.

Watten has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Sloan uses from the top position.
Watten is adopting a defensive guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Watten can do anything to dispel that myth.
Sloan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Watten working for a triangle but Sloan defends it easily.
Sloan is fighting to break Watten 's control of his arms but Watten is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sloan drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Watten dives on top into guard.

Sloan is trying to control the position but Watten postures up.

Watten postures up and lands a big shot to Sloan's brow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sloan escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Watten gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Watten clinches.
Sloan could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Sloan has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Watten uses from the top position.

Watten stands up from Sloan's guard - Watten perhaps looking for a knockout.

Watten looks for a takedown but Sloan sprawls well.
Sloan jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit.

Watten closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Sloan manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Sloan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Sloan trying to control but Watten postures up.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Watten lands a nice short elbow.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Sloan is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Watten 's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Watten 's back!
I really don't envy Watten right now.
Watten trying to get back to his feet but Sloan is in full control for now.

Sloan is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Watten knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Watten for a finish.
Watten breaks Sloan's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Watten gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Sloan goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.

Watten throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Sloan was covering up waiting for the punch and Watten finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Watten is standing up over Sloan. Sloan looks to escape but Watten dives into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Watten is putting a hurting on Sloan here, landing some big shots from side control.

Watten stands up and beckons Sloan to his feet.

Watten misses with an attempted mid kick.

Watten pulls guard.
Watten is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Watten is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Sloan is aware though and is defending well.

Mark Watten showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Watten lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!

Watten has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Sloan regains guard immediately.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Watten . He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Sloan is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Watten is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Watten gets in close and instigates a clinch.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Watten takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Watten lands a body shot in the clinch.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Watten jumps into guard, dragging Sloan to the mat.
Watten is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Sloan postures up in Watten 's guard and throws a big left but Watten blocks it.

Watten manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Watten ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Watten no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Watten pulls Sloan in close to prevent any damage.
Watten manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Sloan manages to get himself to full guard.

Watten wants to stand but Sloan has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Watten lands a couple of decent looking shots.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Sloan is trying to control the position but Watten postures up.
Watten trying to control the position from guard on top but Sloan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Watten passes Sloan's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Watten seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Watten slips a nice elbow through Sloan's hands, connecting with Sloan's forehead.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mark Watten comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Watten has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
