PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Earle Gardner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kelvin Handleman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Handleman has chosen Pride FC Theme as his entrance music. Kelvin Handleman has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Earle Gardner's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Earle Gardner!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kelvin Handleman!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Ben Watson and Chris Dean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A lazy left from Handleman finds it's target.

Gardner gets caught flat footed, as Handleman shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Handleman stays in close to Gardner's body and controls the position.
Handleman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Gardner works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Handleman postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Handleman seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Handleman's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Handleman rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Gardner counters with a nice low kick that buckles Handleman's knee momentarily.
Handleman is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Gardner.
Gardner misses with a kick to the body

and Handleman counters with a single leg into guard. Gardner didn't expect that.
Handleman tries to free his leg and advance position but Gardner is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Handleman should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Handleman postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Handleman controls from within his opponent's guard.
Gardner controls Handleman momentarily but Handleman frees himself.
Handleman throws a strike but Gardner rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Handleman told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.

Handleman wants to get back to his feet but Gardner is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Gardner drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Handleman manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Gardner has Handleman in his guard.

Handleman slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Gardner not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Handleman stays in close to Gardner's body and controls the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Gardner with a poor takedown
and Handleman cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kelvin Handleman dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Handleman tries to clinch up.
And Gardner counters with a quick kick to the body but Handleman blocks it.

Handleman closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Gardner's guard.
Gardner is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Handleman with a flurry of punches that miss.

Handleman has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Handleman lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Gardner can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Handleman controls the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Handleman gets a double leg takedown into Gardner's guard.
Handleman's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Gardner can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Handleman controls the pace.
Handleman loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Gardner is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Handleman forces Gardner back against the cage and clinches.

Handleman gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Gardner is looking to control Handleman's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gardner avoid being mounted?

Gardner on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Handleman looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Well, if Handleman is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Handleman is trying to work for a kimura but Gardner is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gardner tries to pull guard but Handleman holds him up against the cage and eventually Gardner drops back down to his feet.
Gardner goes for a takedown in the clinch but Handleman prevents it.

Gardner will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Handleman with a flurry of punches that miss.
Handleman wants to get up but he can't break Gardner's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Handleman darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Handleman thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Gardner's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Handleman winds up and cracks Gardner with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
Handleman perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Gardner is trying to get back to full guard.
Handleman stalling.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Handleman has Gardner up against the cage in a clinch.

Handleman has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Gardner is trying to keep an underhook but Handleman manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Handleman working over Gardner with some ground and pound. Gardner looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Kelvin Handleman comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Handleman has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
