Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Derek David! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Dirk Norbit! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Anthony Taglia and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! David needs to keep his hands up - Norbit had a free shot at his head there. Oooooh!!! David has knocked Norbit down with a huge combo! David steps away and waves a wobbly Norbit back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!
It looks like Dirk Norbit has been cut. David shoots in and bounces Norbit off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! David stopping the sweep attempt from Norbit. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. David wants to control from the top but Norbit keeps moving. David is stalling in the full guard. Norbit looking for a sweep. Not yet Norbit, not yet. David passes easily into side control. Nice work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Norbit takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. David working the ground and pound but Norbit is defending the strikes. Norbit tries to bench press David off him but David keeps the position. David has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. David working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. David is looking to take a break and control but Norbit is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. David happy to just control the position for now.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Norbit is trying to improve his position. David tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. David working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Norbit is in a bad spot here and he knows it... just holding on for now. David trying to control the action but Norbit is working from the bottom. David tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. David throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. David scoring with punches from side control. Norbit taking a bit of punishment here - David scoring with strikes. Norbit is looking for a sweep. Norbit tries to escape but David is in control. David decides to stand back up. David slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Norbit wants to slow David down by chopping away at his legs. Norbit misses with a straight right. David is looking to counter punch. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. David tries a head kick but it misses.
David changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Norbit tries to avoid it but David manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Norbit to the ground. Norbit escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. A nice combination there by Norbit.
Norbit throws a combination but it was largely blocked by David. Norbit lands a nice hook to David's body. David takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Derek David dominated that round. The cut man is working on Dirk Norbit's cut. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Norbit lands a two punch combo.
Norbit lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
It looks like Derek David has been cut. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from David. David throws a lazy right hand but Norbit sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Norbit sizes up David with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Norbit throws an overhand right that drops David like a sack of potatoes! Norbit dives in to finish the fight with more strikes and this one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:25 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Dirk Norbit! Dirk Norbit gave a mention to RAGS of a RONIN in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales).
