The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A decent looking cross lands there for Smith.
Sawyer doesn't manage to clinch there - Smith circles away.
Some wild striking there from Smith.
Smith lands a nice hook to Sawyer's body. Sawyer takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Smith scores with a decent looking hook.
John Smith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith throws a shot to the body.
Sawyer fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Smith avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smith will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Sawyer throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Smith tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.

The fighters circle momentarily. Smith darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Smith.

Smith makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Smith tries to circle away but Sawyer has him pinned against the cage.
Sawyer tries to pull guard but Smith holds him up against the cage and eventually Sawyer drops back down to his feet.

Sawyer has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Smith uses from the top position.

Sawyer moves to clinch but Smith breaks away
and Smith counters with a left to the body.
Smith lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Sawyer wants to clinch up but Smith keeps it at a distance.
Smith throws a series of punches but Sawyer moves out of range.
Smith tries to bum rush Sawyer with a series of wild strikes but Sawyer uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Sawyer throws a big counter combination but Smith scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.

Smith lands a nice shot to the body.
Smith is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Sawyer rather than just go for the knockout.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sawyer shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Smith as he jumps to the side.
Smith thuds his right hand into Sawyer's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Smith throws a series of punches but Sawyer moves out of range.
Sawyer shoots for a double leg takedown but Smith sprawls well. He's pushed Sawyer's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sawyer is rocked!
Smith lands a slapping body shot.
Oh Sawyer is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Smith connects with a right that clearly hurt Sawyer. He's backed up against the cage with nowhere to go as Smith proceeds to tee off with vicious combinations till Sawyer collapses and taps out under the pressure!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Smith!
