Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jonah Gilbert! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Roman Divac! The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, Eddie Farnsworth and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Divac tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Gilbert paws at him with a jab and circles away. Gilbert tries to counter with a takedown but Divac is quick to defend against it. Roman Divac seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. The fight stays on the outside here - Divac looks like he's thinking about clinching though. Gilbert feinted with a counter takedown. Gilbert could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Divac closes the distance and clinches. Divac's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Divac tries to score with a low kick but Gilbert moves his leg out of the way. Divac lands a really nice looking cross but Gilbert seems unphased.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Divac misses with a jab to the body
and Gilbert decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Divac's guard. Gilbert is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Divac really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gilbert. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Gilbert scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Divac had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gilbert defends it easily. Gilbert wants to stand but Divac is controlling his posture from full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gilbert lands a couple of elbows. Gilbert throws a big right hand that misses. Divac is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gilbert is controlling him. Gilbert throws a strike but Divac rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Divac wants to stand but Gilbert has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Gilbert keeping moving, preventing Divac from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gilbert is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Divac trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Gilbert seems keen to control Divac's posture. Gilbert scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Divac has closed the distance and engaged Gilbert in a clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Divac lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
It looks like Jonah Gilbert has been cut. Divac clinches up with Gilbert and pushes him back against the cage. With the fighters clinched against the cage, Divac creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut. Gilbert has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Divac uses from the top position. Gilbert wants to sweep but no luck. Divac wants to stand but Gilbert is controlling his posture from full guard. Divac not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. That was a close round but I would say that Jonah Gilbert will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Jonah Gilbert's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Divac gets a clinch. Gilbert swings wildly with an uppercut but Divac uses good head movement to avoid it. Divac breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
