The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Umar keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Umar feints the counter takedown. Paul misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Umar steps in looking to clinch after the strikes miss from Paul. Paul tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Umar swivels and escapes. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bradley Paul. That's going to take a lot out of him. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Paul is defended easily by Umar. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Paul shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Umar is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here. Paul drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Paul is looking to take a break and control but Umar is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Umar is trying to control Paul's posture but Paul avoids it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Paul tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Paul has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Paul working away. Umar felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Umar tries to get back to half guard but can't. Paul throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Paul has an Americana. Umar didn't react quickly enough there and he's in big trouble now! He tries to squirm out but is forced to tap! Paul is delighted and gyrates in front of the ring girls. They seem to like the attention - it'll be interesting to see if Paul hooks up with any of them at the after show party.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Bradley Paul!
