Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
17 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bruce Diehard! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tom Jones! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Robert Twigg and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Diehard with a nice cross. Jones throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Diehard sees it coming and avoids it easily. Diehard tries to counter with a takedown but Jones is quick to defend against it. Diehard shoots in and bounces Jones off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Jones can do anything to dispel that myth. Diehard tries to free his leg and advance position but Jones is retaining full guard. Jones scrambles and gets back to his feet.
A jab from Jones misses. Jones missing with a left hand there. Diehard was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Diehard avoids the body shot from Jones.
Diehard shoots in and bounces Jones off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Jones wriggles free and stands up. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Jones misses with a straight left. A little feinted left hand from Diehard on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Diehard bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Jones misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Jones has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. Jones throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Jones throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Diehard avoids a punch combination nicely.
Diehard takes the fight into the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jones can't break the clinch.
Diehard throws a head punch that misses. Diehard working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Diehard digs a right hand into Jones's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Jones's gas tank. Jones blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Diehard lands a right hand. Jones pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Diehard uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Jones has time to react. Diehard uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Jones. Diehard changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Jones lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Diehard circles away quickly and effectively. Diehard displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Jones throws out the jab. Diehard appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body. Jones misses with a body punch
and Diehard moves into the clinch. Jones breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Diehard lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Diehard looks to land a left hand but Jones moved out of range nicely. Jones throws a body shot but no joy. Diehard was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger. Jones smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Diehard connects with a body shot. Tom Jones seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Diehard shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Jones napping and manages to drive through into side control! Jones throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done! Diehard moves out of range of the strikes. Diehard moves out of range of the strikes. Jones throws a jab but it's blocked by Diehard. Jones is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Diehard. Diehard defending well as Jones loads up on a big left hand. Diehard darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Jones makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work! Jones throws a combination that misses and Diehard counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Jones throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Diehard. Diehard connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. Diehard closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Diehard works his way into full mount! Jones has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jones manages to get to his feet, escaping the difficult position. A jab from Jones finds it's way through Diehard's defenses.
It looks like Bruce Diehard has been cut. Diehard decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Jones pushes Diehard off and gets back to his feet. Diehard uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Jones. Diehard gets in close and instigates a clinch. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Jones is looking to break free of the clinch but Diehard has double underhooks. Jones working hard to break the clinch. Jones tries a body shot but Diehard blocks it.
A head punch on the inside from Diehard fails to land. Jones has had enough of the clinch but Diehard keeps him there for the moment. A quick uppercut on the inside from Jones. Diehard throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Joness head. Diehard misses with a short punch on the inside. Diehard has clasped his hands together around Jones's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Jones is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Diehard remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Diehard is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Diehard has hold of Jones's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Jones seems comfortable defending it but Diehard has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Jones is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Jones is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Diehard couldn't care less - he's delighted!
