Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jorge Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Benny Cortez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cortez is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Brazilian Fight Song by Stephane Attias. Benny Cortez has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cortez lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends Alves sprawling to the canvas. Cortez follows him down, looking for the kill. Can Alves hang on?

It looks like Jorge Alves has been cut.
Alves has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Cortez is working away from the top position though.
Cortez is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Cortez takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Cortez prevents Alves from improving his position.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Cortez in particular looking to stall.
Cortez passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Alves!
This has been an exciting period of action!

Cortez stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.

Cortez drives through with a takedown into Alves's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Cortez really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alves. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Alves has momentary wrist control but Cortez slips an elbow through the middle.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Cortez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Alves is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Alves tries to clinch but Cortez moves out of range.
Alves has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Cortez.

and Cortez counters with a three punch combo that has Alves backing up. Alves nods at Cortez to acknowledge the strikes.

Cortez closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Alves did well to prevent Cortez getting side control.
Alves might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Cortez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Alves does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cortez misses with a head shot. Alves uses the momentum to regain guard.
Cortez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Alves swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Cortez is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Alves thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Alves looking for a sweep. Not yet Alves, not yet.
Alves is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Alves gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Cortez to score an easy takedown into full guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Cortez has closed the distance and engaged Alves in a clinch.

Cortez has hold of one of Alves's legs. Alves is fighting the takedown attempt but Cortez gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Cortez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Alves looking to hit a scissor sweep but Cortez is one step ahead there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alves controls Cortez momentarily but Cortez frees himself.

Cortez wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.

Cortez is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Alves has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Cortez is looking to defend but Alves has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Cortez! Alves pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Cortez taps out and this one is all over!
