PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Popeye Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and David Coleman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coleman looks for a takedown but Penn sprawls well.
Penn is breathing heavily.

Penn shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Penn was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Coleman is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Coleman really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Coleman wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
Coleman is trying to escape the mount.
Coleman should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Coleman looks out of his depth in this position - he's holding on tight.
Penn won't let Coleman get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Coleman is looking to improve his position.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Coleman clinches.
Penn tries for a takedown. No joy.
Coleman avoiding damage.
Penn tries to stall but Coleman uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
Coleman stalling the fight.
Coleman lands an elbow inside.

Coleman manages to break the clinch.
Coleman shoots for a takedown but Penn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Coleman misses with a takedown

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into side control. Coleman won't be happy with that.
Popeye Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Coleman.
Penn is looking to take a break and control but Coleman is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Coleman really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Penn. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Penn is really struggling to control Coleman but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Coleman pushes Penn away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Penn gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Coleman is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Penn is controlling him well.
Penn in side control lands a decent elbow.

Penn decides to stand back up. Penn steps back and let's Coleman get back to his feet.
Penn fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Coleman manages to avoid it.
Coleman shoots in for a double leg but Penn sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Coleman moves out of range of the body kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Popeye Penn dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Penn keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Coleman avoids the body shot from Penn.
Nice takedown defense from Penn. No joy for Coleman on that attempt.
Popeye Penn seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Penn fails to land the takedown.
Coleman misses with a takedown attempt - Penn sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Horrible takedown by Penn or perhaps it was just good defense by Coleman which made him look bad.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Penn wants to free his trapped foot but Coleman is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Coleman tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Penn manages to move to mount!

Penn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Coleman is looking to escape.

Penn lands with some strikes.
Coleman wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Penn.
Penn misses with a head shot.
Coleman is in all sorts of trouble here.
Coleman is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Penn lands with some strikes.
Coleman is looking to get to half guard.
Coleman is squirming around, avoiding Penn's attempts to control the action.
Coleman is bucking up trying to escape but Penn cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Coleman taking shots to the head.
Penn pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Penn moves in looking to clinch but Coleman pushes him off.
Coleman fails in his attempt to clinch.
Coleman shoots and misses

and Penn counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Penn tries to free his leg and advance position but Coleman is retaining full guard.
Coleman keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.
Penn is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Coleman preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Coleman throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Coleman is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Coleman's head.
Penn won't allow Coleman to get back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Penn looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Penn is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Coleman!
Coleman tries to buck Penn off but he can't manage it.
Penn in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.
Penn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Coleman is looking to escape.
Penn is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Coleman can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Coleman is trying to get back to his feet but can't.

Penn goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Coleman turns into him and now he's in Penn's guard.
Coleman must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Penn keeping moving, preventing Coleman from controlling successfully.

Penn has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Coleman off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Coleman looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Penn moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Penn stuffs the takedown attempt from Coleman. Coleman gets slowly back to his feet.
Coleman tries to close the distance and clinch up but Penn swats him away and circles back towards the center.

and Penn counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Penn.
Popeye Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David Coleman.
Penn is working Coleman over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Popeye Penn showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Penn, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
