Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sam Commings! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Cain Lesner! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Ren Mimura and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Commings tries to clinch up but Lesner circles away and keeps his distance. Lesner bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. A lull in the action here. Lesner lands an elbow. Lesner lands a few punches from side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Commings can't do much from the bottom here. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Commings manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Commings taking some punishment here, with Lesner in his half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Well, if Lesner is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lesner lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Commings gets full guard. Commings is trying to keep Lesner in close.
Commings has momentary wrist control but Lesner slips an elbow through the middle. Lesner working some strikes from top position. Lesner controls from within his opponent's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Lesner stands up over Commings, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Lesner controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Lesner works over Commings with some ground and pound from guard. Commings looking to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lesner content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Lesner scoring with some ground and pound. Lesner content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Lesner is stalling in the full guard.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Commings wants to clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Commings wants to clinch but Lesner slips to the side and Lesner counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Commings tries to clinch up. Lesner has closed the distance and engaged Commings in a clinch.
Lesner successfully pulls guard.
Commings throwing strikes from guard but Lesner blocks nicely. Lesner looking to sweep here. No luck so far. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Lesner holds on and takes a little breather. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Lesner pushes Commings off and scrambles back to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Cain Lesner dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Lesner cracks a nice hook into Commings's ribs. Lesner rushes Commings and presses him up against the cage. Lesner gets a trip takedown into half guard. Lesner landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Lesner is controlling the pace.
Lesner prevents Commings from improving his position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lesner looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Commings is trying to get back to full guard. Commings is trying to maintain the position but Lesner is very close to passing his half guard. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Lesner connects with a nice short shot to Commings's temple. Commings is trying to control but can't.
Lesner in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Commings tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Lesner!
