PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tyron Woodley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Roy Nelson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Nelson comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Don't Mean A Thing kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tyron Woodley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 20 - 20 - 0, fighting out of New York, Roy Nelson!
The judges for this bout are Hirohito Nitta, Shirou Masuda and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nelson misses with a right hand

and Woodley counters with a takedown into side control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nelson takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Nelson is looking for a sweep.
Nelson taking a bit of punishment here - Woodley scoring with strikes.
Nelson tries to bench press Woodley off him but Woodley keeps the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nelson is not content to let Woodley control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Woodley throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Nelson works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure.

Nelson is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Woodley is controlling him.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Nelson wants to stand up but Woodley is controlling him.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Nelson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nelson drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.


It looks like Roy Nelson has been cut.
Woodley tries a head kick but it misses.
Woodley uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Nelson.
Nelson cracks Woodley with a right hand to the side of the head.
Nelson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Nelson rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Woodley moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Nelson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Woodley.
Woodley is looking to clinch.
Nelson misses the shot to the body.
Woodley drops down looking for a counter takedown but Nelson sprawls and moves away.

Woodley fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Nelson, pushing him back against the cage.
Woodley lands a body punch.
Nelson wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Nelson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Woodley closes the distance and clinches.
Nelson lands a left hand.

Nelson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Woodley tries to close the distance and clinch but Nelson swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Woodley jabs. That one connects to the head of his opponent.

Woodley slips a straight right by Nelson.

Woodley clinches up against the cage.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Woodley has a couple of punches blocked by Nelson.
Nelson working hard to break the clinch.
Nelson tries to circle away but Woodley has him pinned against the cage.

Nelson breaks the clinch.
Woodley catches Nelson with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Nelson lands with an uppercut that bounces Woodley off the cage and back into range.
Nelson scores with a nice right hand.

Woodley forces Nelson back against the cage and clinches.
Woodley misses with a punch to the body.
Woodley lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Nelson throws a punch but it's blocked by Woodley.
Woodley pushes Nelson back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.
Nelson is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Nelson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tyron Woodley will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Roy Nelson's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Nelson bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Woodley's head.

Oooh a lovely combination from Nelson sends Woodley down but not out. Nelson dives into side control looking to finish.


Woodley is rocked!


It looks like Tyron Woodley has been cut.
Woodley is looking to reverse the position.
Oh Woodley is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Woodley is working hard here to advance position.
Woodley has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Nelson is fighting to break Woodley's control of his arms but Woodley is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Nelson is looking to stand up but Woodley won't let him.
Woodley controls Nelson momentarily but Nelson frees himself.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Roy Nelson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Roy Nelson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Nelson slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Nelson cracks Woodley with an uppercut from hell and Woodley crumples to the canvas, he's out! Oh no, he's recovered and he's grabbed one of Nelson's legs and pulled him into guard. The ref thought about stopping it there but he's let it go - good reffing!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Woodley wants to sweep here but Nelson controlling him for the moment.
Woodley is looking to sweep but instead, Nelson has passed into half guard.
Nelson throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Nelson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Woodley, up you get!

And that's the end of the fight!
Roy Nelson comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nelson has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
