Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gunji Koizumi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Johnny Smith!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Shigeki Sano and Ren Mimura.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a jab but it's blocked by Koizumi.
A momentary lapse in concentration from Smith enables Koizumi to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smith manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Koizumi throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smith works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Koizumi trying to control but Smith is working from the bottom.
Koizumi throws a strike but Smith rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Smith throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Koizumi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Smith's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Koizumi has momentary wrist control but Smith slips an elbow through the middle.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smith accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Smith loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Koizumi utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! Koizumi looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Koizumi looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Koizumi!

Koizumi wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Smith, who protects the arm well.

Koizumi is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Smith has escaped the position, nice work there.
Koizumi throwing strikes but Smith manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Smith scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Koizumi to see if he's OK.
Smith cracks Koizumi with a big elbow.

Koizumi tries to buck Smith off but Smith is having none of it.

Koizumi is rocked!
It looks like Gunji Koizumi has been cut.
Koizumi struggling a bit here.
A big shot lands for Smith! That's hurt Koizumi! Will he recover? Smith fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Johnny Smith!
After the fight, Johnny Smith was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
