Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Lu Wai Ping (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricky Monroe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Wai Ping comes to the cage accompanied by Once upon a time in China. Monroe is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Deep Ocean - Island drumming. The key to victory for Lu Wai Ping has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Lu Wai Ping! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
17 - 11 - 2, fighting out of Tokyo, Ricky Monroe! The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Shirou Masuda and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Monroe fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Wai Ping avoids it really well and circles away. Monroe fails to land with a series of punches.
Monroe shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Wai Ping's guard. Monroe with a nice head shot there. Wai Ping avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Monroe working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Monroe trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Wai Ping keeping moving, preventing Monroe from controlling successfully. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Monroe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Monroe stops Wai Ping from standing up. Monroe trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Monroe won't allow Wai Ping to get back to his feet. Monroe trying to control but Wai Ping is working from the bottom. Monroe must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Monroe is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Monroe won't allow Wai Ping to get back to his feet. Monroe missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Wai Ping uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Monroe is trying hard to land a takedown here. Wai Ping sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Wai Ping tries to clinch but Monroe moves out of range. Wai Ping tests Monroe's chin there with a solid looking shot. Monroe drives through with a takedown into guard. Monroe throws a strike but Wai Ping rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Monroe has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Wai Ping is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Monroe.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Monroe trying his best to control but Wai Ping has mounted him. Monroe keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Monroe is still trying to improve position. Monroe regains half guard. Monroe is defending against the submission attempts here by Wai Ping.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Wai Ping is trying to control the action in half guard but Monroe is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Wai Ping is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Monroe is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Monroe looking for a kimura from the bottom but Wai Ping passes into side control! Wai Ping decides to take the fight back to the feet. Nice sprawl there from Wai Ping as Monroe shoots in. Lu Wai Ping has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricky Monroe. Wai Ping closes the distance and clinches. Wai Ping misses with a punch on the inside.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Wai Ping pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Monroe manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Wai Ping on his heels. He'll look to pass Wai Ping's guard now, I'm sure. Monroe throwing strikes from guard but Wai Ping blocks nicely. Monroe won't allow Wai Ping to get back to his feet. Monroe stands up over Wai Ping, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Monroe lands a couple of decent looking shots. Wai Ping working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Monroe. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Monroe accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Monroe trying to control the position from guard on top but Wai Ping is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Monroe postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Lu Wai Ping will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Wai Ping lands a jab-cross combination. Ricky Monroe is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Monroe takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Wai Ping tries to clinch there but Monroe circles away.
Monroe misses with a shot to the body and Wai Ping counters with a two punch combo. Wai Ping pushes Monroe up against the cage in a clinch. Monroe jumps guard but Wai Ping stands there with Monroe around his waist. Monroe gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Wai Ping scores with an uppercut up the middle. Monroe jumps guard.
Wai Ping controlling from the top position. Monroe had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wai Ping defends it easily. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Wai Ping trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Monroe looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Monroe keeping moving, preventing Wai Ping from controlling successfully. Wai Ping looking to sit in guard and control but Monroe gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Monroe makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Monroe distracts Wai Ping with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Wai Ping is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Monroe is controlling him. Monroe missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Monroe working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Monroe is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Monroe is working Wai Ping over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Wai Ping is rocked! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Monroe postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Oh Wai Ping is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Monroe throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Wai Ping uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Monroe shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Monroe showed some decent athleticism there. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Monroe is trying to control. Wai Ping wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Monroe thows a huge punch but Wai Ping dodges it nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Monroe seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Monroe throwing shots but Wai Ping is blocking nicely. Monroe lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Wai Ping! More strikes land and this one is all over! Monroe jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
