PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carl Weathers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Wang Qiang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The fight MMA fans around the world have waited their entire lives for!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Carl Weathers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Wang Qiang!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Qiang throws a head kick but Weathers moves out of range.
Weathers looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Qiang tries to bum rush Weathers with a series of wild strikes but Weathers uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Qiang shoots in looking for a takedown. Weathers tries to sprawl out of it but Qiang keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Weathers manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Weathers tries to counter with a takedown but Qiang is quick to defend against it.
Qiang throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Weathers moves into the clinch.
Qiang wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Weathers has him pressed against the cage.
Qiang has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Weathers after a bit of a struggle.
Carl Weathers has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wang Qiang.
Qiang is trying to force a seperation but Weathers has the dominant position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Qiang darts in and clinches Weathers up against the cage.

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Qiang is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Weathers to keep the fight standing.

Qiang lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Weathers backwards.

Qiang escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Qiang wants to take the fight to the mat but Weathers manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Qiang jumps guard and drags Weathers to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Weathers is fighting to break Qiang's control of his arms but Qiang is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Qiang is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Weathers defends well.

Qiang is adopting a defensive guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Weathers trying to control but Qiang is working from the bottom.
Weathers won't allow Qiang to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Qiang looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Weathers won't allow Qiang to get back to his feet.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Qiang is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Weathers is aware though and is defending well.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Qiang shoots in but Weathers avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Qiang moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Qiang pulls guard.
Qiang trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!

Qiang has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Weathers can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Weathers prevents Qiang from getting back to his feet.
Qiang pulls Weathers in close to his closed guard and prevents Weathers from doing any damage or advancing position.

Qiang had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Weathers defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Wang Qiang dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Qiang drives through and clinches with Weathers against the cage.
Qiang prevents the takedown attempt.

Qiang has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Weathers avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Qiang wants to break free but Weathers has control.
Qiang tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Weathers definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

Weathers breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Qiang lands with a right hand.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Qiang shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Qiang showed some decent athleticism there.

Qiang looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Qiang content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Let's hope that Qiang has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Qiang is working for a kimura but Weathers is defending it quite comfortably.
Qiang is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Qiang's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Qiang wants to pass the guard but Weathers is defending well.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Qiang throws a wild body kick that Weathers sees coming a mile off.
Weathers keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Carl Weathers has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Wang Qiang.
Qiang shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Weathers as he avoids it easily.
It looked like Weathers was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Qiang blocks the body kick.

Qiang darts in and clinches Weathers up against the cage.
Qiang fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Qiang drops down looking for an ankle pick but Weathers pulls his leg out and moves away.

Qiang tries to circle away but Weathers has him pinned against the cage.
Weathers is trying to drag Qiang to the mat but Qiang just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Qiang has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Wang Qiang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Weathers's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Qiang throws a leg kick but Weathers sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Weathers throws a sloppy head kick and Qiang moves out of range easily.
Qiang tries to counter by closing the distance.
Weathers tries to score a power double leg takedown but Qiang sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Weathers somewhat.

With the fighters up against the cage, Qiang throws an elbow but misses.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Qiang is pressed up against the cage. Weathers has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Qiang down to the mat. Qiang avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Qiang dips to his left and cracks Weathers with an uppercut!
Qiang tries a low kick but Weathers avoids it.

Qiang pushes Weathers up against the cage in a clinch.
Weathers is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Qiang tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Weathers smiles and moves away.
Qiang lands a two punch combo.


It looks like Carl Weathers has been cut.

Qiang wants to break the clinch but can't.
Qiang is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Qiang gets control of Weathers's arms and successfully pulls guard. Qiang will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Qiang has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Weathers is working away from the top position though.

Qiang misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Qiang wants to control but Weathers is keeping busy and won't allow it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Wang Qiang seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Qiang rushes Weathers and presses him up against the cage.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Weathers gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Qiang.
Qiang wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Weathers fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Weathers tries a body shot but Qiang blocks it.
Qiang is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Weathers to keep the fight standing.
Qiang cracks Weathers with a nice body shot.
Weathers changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Qiang fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Qiang changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Weathers tries to avoid it but Qiang manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Weathers to the ground. Weathers escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Qiang dives in for a single leg takedown but Weathers sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Qiang misses with a takedown attempt - Weathers sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Qiang closes the distance and clinches.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Wang Qiang is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Wang Qiang comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Qiang has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
