Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Maddox Wood! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Eduardo Da Silva! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Anni Minnemäki and Roosa Järviläinen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wood throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Wood misses with a two punch combination.
Wood missing with a left hand there. Da Silva was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Wood tries to bum rush Da Silva with a series of wild strikes but Da Silva uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Da Silva throws out a counter right but Wood avoids it with no problem. No joy there for Wood, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Wood tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Da Silva paws at him with a jab and circles away. Wood throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
A big right from Wood misses. Da Silva lands a jab-cross combination. Da Silva's jab looks to have found its range, popping Wood under the eye. Da Silva misses with a jab, cross combination.
Wood misses with a two punch combination.
Despite the aggression on Da Silva's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Wood misses with a wild combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Wood throws a hook but Da Silva avoids it easily. A jab from Wood misses. Da Silva is looking for the big counter here. Wood throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Da Silva sees it coming and avoids it easily. As Wood backs off Da Silva throws a huge counter combo but Wood manages to avoid it all. Wood thows a leg kick but Da Silva checks it and Da Silva connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Wood misses with a head kick.
Da Silva lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected. Da Silva fails to land with a series of punches.
Wood tries to clinch but Da Silva is having none of it. Maddox Wood seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Da Silva lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Da Silva. Da Silva lands a two punch combo.
Wood moves to clinch but Da Silva breaks away and Da Silva counters with a two punch combo. Wood throws a combination that misses and Da Silva connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Wood moves to clinch but Da Silva breaks away and Da Silva counters with a straight right hand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Wood throws a hook to the side of Da Silva's head but Da Silva sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Da Silva let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land. Wood throws a big shot that misses. Da Silva swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Da Silva misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Oooh a lovely combination from Wood sends Da Silva down but not out. Wood dives into side control looking to finish.
Da Silva is rocked!
It looks like Marcelo Eduardo Da Silva has been cut. Wood working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Da Silva is still in real trouble! Can Wood finish him? Wood throws an elbow but Da Silva slips to the side and avoids it well. Da Silva is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Wood asserts his dominance and retains side control. Wood has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Wood is looking to take a break and control but Da Silva is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Wood tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Wood has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Da Silva seems to have recovered his senses. Wood looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Da Silva is avoiding damage well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Wood is working to tighten his grip on Da Silva's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Da Silva has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Wood is really squeezing tight and eventually Da Silva passes out! Wood breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
