Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yi Dong! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mike Ryan! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, John Mangel and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice sprawl there from Ryan as Dong shoots in. Dong shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Ryan but Ryan pushes him off and we're back to square one. Dong tries to close the distance and clinch but Ryan swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Dong misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Ryan.
Horrible takedown attempt by Dong or perhaps it was just good defense by Ryan, which made it look bad. And Ryan tries to counter it with a takedown but Dong pushes his down on his head and steps out. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yi Dong. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Dong tries to close the distance and clinch up but Ryan swats him away and circles back towards the center. Ryan with the counter takedown but Dong avoids it easily. Dong fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Dong thows a leg kick but Ryan checks it and Ryan decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Dong's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ryan stands and steps away. Dong gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. A head kick by Dong misses and Ryan decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Dong's guard. Ryan wants to stand but Dong is controlling his posture from full guard. Ryan sitting in guard here, content to control. Dong knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ryan on the ground. Let's hope that Ryan has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Dong will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ryan won't allow Dong to sweep him here. Ryan passes Dong's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Dong is looking for a sweep. Ryan is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Ryan is pressing down on Dong's thigh, looking to free his foot. Dong is holding on for now. Ryan decides to stand and escape the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Dong moves to clinch but Ryan breaks away and Ryan counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Dong! Ryan has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Dong is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Ryan yanks on the arm and Dong is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Ryan.
