Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
20 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mo Thanyoo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
38 - 76 - 3, fighting out of Montreal, Veli Schwarzeneg! The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Alec Ball and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thanyoo fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Schwarzeneg, pushing him back against the cage. Thanyoo lands a shoulder strike. Thanyoo has Schwarzeneg pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Thanyoo pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Schwarzeneg tumbling to the mat - Thanyoo dives into Schwarzeneg's guard. Thanyoo pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Schwarzeneg is keeping the position for now. Thanyoo passes easily into side control. Nice work. You can see the frustration on Schwarzeneg's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Thanyoo controlling the position from side mount. Schwarzeneg struggling a bit here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Thanyoo is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Schwarzeneg is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. We've been hearing good reports from Thanyoo's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Schwarzeneg is trying to get back to half guard. Thanyoo cracks Schwarzeneg with an elbow. That is naaassty. Schwarzeneg tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Thanyoo wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Thanyoo is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Schwarzeneg is trying to escape and Thanyoo transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Schwarzeneg is forced to tap! Nice work there by Thanyoo! Very nice indeed!
