Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Asko Asinen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeremy Punzalan! The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Sergei Dronov and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Asinen scores with a takedown into Punzalan's guard. Asinen controlling from the top position. Punzalan is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Asinen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Punzalan on the ground. Asinen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Punzalan has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Asinen has managed to get both his arms back between Punzalan's legs - danger averted. Asinen sitting in guard here, content to control. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Asinen is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Asinen slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Asinen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Punzalan has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Asinen has managed to get both his arms back between Punzalan's legs - danger averted.
That's one minute gone in the round. Asinen stays in close to Punzalan's body and controls the position. Asinen has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Asinen seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Punzalan for as long as he can get away with. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Punzalan wants to sweep but no luck. Asinen trying to control but Punzalan is working from the bottom. Punzalan trying to control the position.
Punzalan has his foot on Asinen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Asinen works his way back into a safe position though. Asinen scoring with punches to the head and body. Punzalan looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Punzalan looking to hit a scissor sweep but Asinen is one step ahead there. Asinen trying to control the position from guard on top but Punzalan is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Asinen is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Asinen keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Punzalan's head.
Punzalan is rocked! Asinen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Punzalan is still in real trouble! Can Asinen finish him? Asinen continues to stall. Punzalan seems to have recovered his senses. Asinen scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Punzalan is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Asinen is aware though and is defending well. Punzalan looks winded! Asinen postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Asinen loads up on a big left hand. Punzalan felt that one! He's just covering up now, not defending himself intelligently - Asinen looks towards the ref and unloads with 3 more big shots and the ref has no choice but to stop the fight! Punzalan can't hide his disappointment, as Asinen celebrates the victory.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Asko Asinen! A very excited looking Asko Asinen made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
