Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joe Lau! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Baby Seal! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! No luck for Seal with that takedown attempt. Lau feinted with a counter takedown. Seal gets caught napping as Lau dives in and scores a takedown. Seal manages to retain guard. Lau working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Seal's head. Seal is looking to stand up but Lau isn't so interested in that idea. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Lau's corner. There ya go! There ya go! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lau lands a couple of digs. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Lau landing with the ground and pound. Seal has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Cozad MMA Montreal. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Lau is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lau working some strikes from top position. Lau showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Lau lands a couple of decent looking shots. Lau distracts Seal with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Lau's corner is telling him to maintain position. Lau content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Lau engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Seal is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Lau showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Lau content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Lau pushing down on Seal's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Lau looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Seal taking some punishment here, with Lau in his half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Seal trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Lau manages to pass to mount!
Lau lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Seal hang on? Lau controlling his opponent. Seal tries to lock up and control but Lau gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Lau pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Lau lands a big elbow. Seal tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lau lands a heavy elbow. Lau cracks Seal with a big head shot that has him covering up instantly! He's rolled onto his side and the referee has seen enough - this one is aaaaaaaaaaall over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:25 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Joe Lau! Joe Lau decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
