PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Sheldon Russo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ollo Matos (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sheldon Russo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ollo Matos!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, David Schapiro and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fighters circling - Russo throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Russo on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Matos. Matos obviously looking to wear him down.
Russo has a takedown stuffed.
Matos wants to clinch up but Russo keeps it at a distance.
A little feinted left hand from Russo on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.
Matos tried to score with a low kick but Russo checks it.
Russo is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Matos.

Matos gets a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Russo wants to get back to his feet.
Matos seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Matos is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Russo tries to get to full guard but Matos has control of the leg.

Matos is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Matos lands a nice short elbow.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Matos is trying to control the action in half guard but Russo is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Matos landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Matos prevents Russo from improving his position.
Matos is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Still in half guard, Matos seems content to control.
Let's hope that Matos has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Matos lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Matos prevents Russo from standing back up.

Matos is working for a submission of some sort.
Well, if Matos is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Russo tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.

Matos is trying to work for a kimura but Russo is defending well.
Matos missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Matos shoots in and gets a takedown into Russo's guard.
Matos stands and throws Russo's legs to the side, diving into side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ollo Matos dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Matos feints and as Russo raises his hands in defense, Matos changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Russo wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Matos manages to pass to side control.

Russo is trying to get back to full guard.
Matos working over Russo with some ground and pound. Russo looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matos is pressing down on Russo's thigh, looking to free his foot. Russo is holding on for now.
Matos is figuring out what he wants to do next.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Matos tries to stand and escape but Russo is controlling the position.
Matos has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Matos perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Russo wants to get back to his feet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Matos scores with a takedown into Russo's guard.

Matos stands up from guard. Let's bang!
The crowd cheers as Matos lands an impressive looking overhand right. Russo doesn't seem phased though.
Ollo Matos seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

letting Matos counter with a right hand.

Matos bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Russo is trying to work for a sweep but Matos has mounted him!

Ollo Matos has got the better of the ground game so far.
Matos lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Matos has control of Russo's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Russo regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Russo takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Matos scores with a couple of good head shots there.

Matos lands a nice shot to the head.
Matos controlling from mount.
Russo might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Matos wants to stand but Russo is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Matos tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ollo Matos showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!

Matos closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Russo's guard.
Matos controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Matos postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Russo is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Matos, into his guard.

Matos is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Russo could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Matos wants to sweep but no luck.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Russo looking to sit in guard and control but Matos gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Matos's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Russo lands a good elbow from the bottom.
Matos is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Russo is striking off his back. Matos thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Matos looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Matos scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Matos is trying to control. Russo wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Russo is looking for a sweep. Matos is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Ollo Matos comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Matos has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
