PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Samuel Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Masras (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alexander comes to the cage accompanied by Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Samuel Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Masras!
The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Ben Hemmingworth and Ron Honeybunn.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Masras misses with a head kick.
Alexander throws a head kick but Masras moves out of range.
Alexander lands with a nice combination. Masras backs away looking to recover.
Alexander fails with an attempt to clinch.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Alexander is defended easily by Masras.
Masras is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Alexander misses with a head kick.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Masras tried to score with a low kick but Alexander checks it.
Alexander really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

As Masras looks to move away, Alexander throws a big counter combo but Masras just gets out of the way.
Masras pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Alexander shoots in but Masras avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Alexander avoids the head kick by Masras.
Masras throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Alexander.
Alexander tries to clinch but Masras moves out of range.
Masras swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Sloppy strikes from Alexander. Those never looked like landing.
Alexander closes this distance looking for a takedown but Masras circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Samuel Alexander. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alexander avoids the head kick by Masras.
Alexander appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Horrible takedown attempt by Alexander or perhaps it was just good defense by Masras, which made it look bad.

and Alexander counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Masras has his hands clasped together around Alexander's back. He's all about the action.

Masras looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Masras is on top in guard.

Masras working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Alexander's head.

Masras is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Masras landing some decent shots from guard.
Masras seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Masras keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Alexander's head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but James Masras will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Alexander uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Masras.
Alexander dives in and grabs Masras's left leg, looking for a takedown. Masras pushes down on Alexander's head and hops out.
Alexander misses with a jab, cross combination.
Alexander throws a sloppy head kick and Masras moves out of range easily.
Masras throws a head kick that misses.
Masras throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Alexander.
Masras fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Masras is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Masras is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Masras chips away with some ground and pound.
Alexander can't keep his opponent in guard - Masras advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
James Masras has got the better of the ground game so far.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Masras lands a nice short elbow.
Alexander knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Masras on the ground.

Alexander slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Masras's corner is telling him to maintain position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Masras goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Alexander is looking for a counter combo.

Masras closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Masras is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Alexander's shoulder. That is not cool.

Masras tries for a kimura but Alexander is defending well.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Alexander can't do much from the bottom here.
Masras is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Masras showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Masras throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

and Masras decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Alexander's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Masras seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Alexander is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Alexander accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Masras has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Masras is pulling down on Alexander's head to control his posture.
Alexander trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Alexander avoids the head kick by Masras.
Alexander seem to be loading up, looking for a big counter.
Alexander uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Masras.
It looked like Alexander was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

A punch lands to the side of Alexander 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Alexander shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Masras as he avoids it easily.
Alexander avoids the head kick by Masras.
Alexander appears to be looking for a big counter.
Alexander tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Masras paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Masras stuffs the takedown.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Masras throws a nice looking combination but Alexander bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Alexander closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Masras did well to prevent Alexander getting side control.
Masras is doing well to control the position and prevent Alexander from advancing to side control.
Masras is pressing down on Alexander's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Masras tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Alexander got a little sloppy there for a moment and Masras has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Alexander has managed to get both his arms back between Masras's legs - danger averted.

James Masras is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Alexander throws a strike but Masras rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

James Masras comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Masras has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
