Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Roger Rydell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mathieu Valverde! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Emerson Jorge and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rydell instigates a clinch. Valverde pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Rydell scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Valverde seems a little lost for a moment, as Rydell dominates the positioning. Rydell working away. Rydell takes a little break here. Valverde wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Rydell trying to control the action but Valverde is working from the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sloppy strikes there by Rydell. Rydell trying to control the position but Valverde is working away. Valverde regains half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rydell looks to score some points with some ground and pound. Rydell is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Valverde defends it well. Rydell is working for a kimura but Valverde is defending it quite comfortably.
Valverde is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Valverde gets back to full guard.

Valverde should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Rydell is trying to get back to full guard. Valverde is keen to just control but Rydell is a slippery customer.

Valverde remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Rydell will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke! Rydell avoiding Valverde 's attempts to control his hands. Rydell lands an elbow to the side of the head. Valverde is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Rydell cracks Valverde with a big shot to body and one to the head - really punishing Valverde from the back mount here, looking to soften him up.

Valverde is looking to take a break and control but Rydell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. We've been hearing good reports from Rydell's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Valverde is trying to reverse the position but instead Rydell has taken his back - oops! Valverde is trying to stand back up. Rydell is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Valverde has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Rydell has his opponent's back and is working for the choke. Rydell is hanging on to Valverde's back as he tries to escape.

Mathieu Valverde is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Valverde tries to keep at a distance but Rydell has taken the fight into the clinch. Rydell tries to land knees in the clinch but Valverde avoids the damage to the body. Rydell tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Valverde avoids it. Valverde tries to score a body lock takedown but Rydell shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Valverde pulls guard effortlessly. Rydell seems to be working for a kimura but Valverde defends the submission attempt. Valverde is holding on to half guard well. Valverde is looking for a sweep. Rydell is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Rydell slows the pace down in half guard. Rydell seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Valverde for as long as he can get away with. Valverde is refusing to be controlled, as Rydell sits in half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Valverde has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Rydell is working away from the top position though. Rydell wants to take a breather but Valverde is having none of it. Rydell moves into full mount! Valverde won't be happy about that! Rydell looking to control and managing it successfully. Rydell lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Rydell can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Valverde is looking to escape. Rydell tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Valverde tries to hold on but Rydell pushes him away. Rydell lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Rydell sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Rydell continues to stall. Valverde keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Valverde is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Rydell controlling his opponent.
And that's the end of the fight! Roger Rydell showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Rydell, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
