PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Billy Goat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Don Cartagena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cartagena has chosen The Crack Attack as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Billy Goat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Don Cartagena!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Steve Smith and Dillan Fox.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cartagena fails to land with a series of punches.
Goat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cartagena as he avoids it easily.
Goat fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Cartagena swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Goat moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Goat looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Cartagena throws a body shot but no joy.
Goat fails in his attempt to clinch.

Goat moves into the clinch.

Goat turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Goat manages to end up in side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Cartagena wants to try and get back to his feet.
Goat lands a big shot there that rocks Cartagena but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Goat swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Cartagena is now in Goat's guard. A big mistake from Goat there, giving up the dominant position!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Goat had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cartagena defends it easily.

Goat controls Cartagena momentarily but Cartagena frees himself.
Cartagena wants to stand but Goat has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Goat lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Cartagena is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Goat is controlling him.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cartagena is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Goat postures up and lands a big shot to Cartagena's brow.

Cartagena pushes Goat off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Cartagena connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Goat momentarily.
Goat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cartagena as he avoids it easily.

Cartagena leaves Goat with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Don Cartagena is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Cartagena looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Cartagena bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Goat's head backwards.
Cartagena tries to bum rush Goat with a series of wild strikes but Goat uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Goat is trying hard to land a takedown here. Cartagena sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Cartagena takes a swing at Goat's ribcage but misses.
Goat takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Cartagena circles away from the clinch attempt.
Cartagena misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Goat.

Goat looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Cartagena pushes Goat off and gets back to his feet.
A looping hook to the body misses from Cartagena. Goat does a little dance to reset his feet.
Goat feinted with a counter takedown.
Cartagena looks to land a right hand but Goat moved out of range.
Goat is looking to clinch.
Billy Goat seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cartagena misses with a two punch combination.

Goat changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Cartagena looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Goat grinds an elbow into Cartagena's temple.
Goat wants to control but Cartagena is keeping him busy.
Goat lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Cartagena really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Goat. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A close round but Don Cartagena will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Goat shoots for a double leg takedown but Cartagena sprawls well. He's pushed Goat's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Cartagena can do anything to dispel that myth.

Billy Goat overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Goat stands up over Cartagena, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Goat connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Cartagena some visible discomfort.

Goat remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Goat thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Goat has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Goat wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cartagena keeps working.

We've been informed that Cartagena has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.

Goat tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Cartagena swivels and escapes.

and Cartagena counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Goat goes for a double leg but Cartagena avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Cartagena continues to drive forward.

Goat wants to clinch but Cartagena slips to the side
and Cartagena counters with a left to the body.

Cartagena lands a big right hand that sends Goat crashing to the mat! Cartagena stays standing though and waves Goat back to his feet!

Goat bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Cartagena throws his opponent off and manages to get back to his feet! Nicely done!

Goat darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

Cartagena makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

Goat drops down looking for a counter takedown but Cartagena sprawls and moves away.

Cartagena avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Goat tries to clinch up

and Cartagena counters with a crisp one two that drops Goat! Cartagena thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Goat to his feet! Goat is in big trouble!
Goat shoots for a takedown but Cartagena saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
A jab from Cartagena finds it's way through Goat's defenses.
Cartagena scores with a jab to the head.
Goat tries to clinch up
and Cartagena counters with a series of strikes that practically lifts Goat off his feet! He tumbles backwards, his head bouncing off the mat - Cartagena follows up with more strikes before the ref can step in but Goat was out before he hit the floor.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:40 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Don Cartagena!
Don Cartagena really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that Urban Fighter logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
