Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Lawrence Sanders! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Victor Belfort! The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sanders closes the distance and clinches. Belfort tries to pull guard but Sanders forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Belfort jumps guard but Sanders turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Sanders is stalling here.
Sanders lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Sanders breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Sanders takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Sanders decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Well, if Sanders is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Belfort is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Sanders pulls his head out easily. Belfort actively working from the bottom here. Sanders really is a fat lump. Sanders is working for a kimura but Belfort is defending it quite comfortably.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sanders is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Sanders decides to stand and escape the position. Sanders takes the fight into the clinch.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Sanders escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Belfort gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Belfort had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Sanders defends it easily. Sanders is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Sanders lands a couple of digs. Sanders showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Belfort escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sanders gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Belfort looks winded!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Belfort is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Sanders is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Sanders seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Belfort for as long as he can get away with.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Sanders landing with the ground and pound. Sanders has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Sanders working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Belfort's head. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Sanders controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Lawrence Sanders dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Belfort throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Sanders counters with a nice double leg into side control. Belfort won't be happy with that. Sanders creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Check out the look on Sanders's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Belfort is rocked! The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Sanders in side control here. He's dropped a big elbow there and Belfort looks hurt! Oh, he is hurt! Sanders turns on the heat and pounds him out for a TKO victory! Good killer instinct there!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Lawrence Sanders!
