PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Mary Noel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Clifton Owens (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Owens has chosen The Bad Touch - Bloodhound Gang as his entrance music. The key to victory for Mary Noel has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Mary Noel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Clifton Owens!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Gregory Folan and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Owens throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Noel's head.
Owens throws a shot from downtown. Noel moves away and avoids it.
Owens misses with a series of wild punches.
Noel works over Owens's head and body with a nice combination.
Noel misses with a double jab.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Owens has eaten all the pies!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Noel throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Noel fails in his attempt to clinch.
Nice body punch from Owens.

That's one minute gone in the round.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Owens has picked Noel up - he's going for a ride! Owens dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Owens seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Owens tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Owens decides to stand and escape the position.
Noel really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Owens works Noel's body with a nice hook.
Owens fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Noel manages to avoid it.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Owens is looking to land body kicks.
Noel fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Owens throws a head kick that Noel semi-blocks.
Noel fails with a takedown attempt.

Noel dodges the punch combination from Owens.

Owens drives through and clinches with Noel against the cage.

Owens wants the takedown. Noel is fighting it off but Owens persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Noel's guard against the cage.
Owens controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Owens is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Noel looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Owens has picked Noel up and slammed him! Noel can't keep hold of the triangle and Owens manages to pass to side control!

Owens decides to stand up, so the ref orders Noel to his feet.
Owens keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Noel tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Owens manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Clifton Owens dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Owens swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Noel is looking to counter the offense by Owens and move into the clinch.
A shot to the liver by Owens. Beautiful body shot.
Owens throws a half hearted mid kick.
Noel is looking to clinch but Owens is avoiding it.

Noel tries to keep at a distance but Owens has taken the fight into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Owens wants the takedown. Noel is fighting it off but Owens persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Noel's guard against the cage.
Owens is in close to Noel's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Owens seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Noel will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Owens stands and steps away. Noel gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Mary Noel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Noel tries to close the distance and clinch but Owens swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Owens tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Noel was well out of range. Poor timing from Owens.
Noel lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!


It looks like Clifton Owens has been cut.
A head kick misses from Owens.

Noel misses with the combination.
Noel dodges the punch combination from Owens.
Noel swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.

Owens closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Owens stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Noel clinches.
Owens just leaning against Noel, taking a breather.

Owens lands a takedown into guard.
Owens looking to control the position here, rather than advance.

Noel looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Owens gets to his feet - Noel follows without any prompting.
Clifton Owens seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Owens has closed the distance and engaged Noel in a clinch.

Owens is pushing Noel up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Owens pulls Noel into guard.
Owens pulls Noel in close to prevent any damage.

Noel got a little sloppy there for a moment and Owens has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Noel has managed to get both his arms back between Owens's legs - danger averted.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Clifton Owens showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Owens misses with a jab, cross combination.
Noel half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Noel shoots in and drives through. Owens sprawls well.
Owens swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made.
Owens lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Noel circles away quickly and effectively.
Noel shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Despite the aggression on Owens's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Owens throws a sloppy head kick and Noel moves out of range easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Noel moves out of range of the body kick.
Noel attempts a counter takedown but Owens avoids it well and moves away.
Owens avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Owens wants to counter with a clinch but Noel pushes him away.

Owens throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Noel rushes Owens and presses him up against the cage.
Noel has had enough of the clinch but Owens keeps him there for the moment.

Owens turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Owens manages to end up in side control.

Owens stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Owens keeps the fight on the outside.
Owens stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Owens wants it to stay on the feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mary Noel. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Owens forces Noel back against the cage and clinches.

Owens gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Well, if Owens is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Let's hope that Owens has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Owens is trying to work for a kimura but Noel is defending well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Owens stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Noel to get to his feet.

Owens keeps the fight on the outside.

Noel gets a clinch.

Owens has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Noel regains guard immediately.
Noel striking off his back but it's not causing Owens any problems.
Noel throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Noel looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Owens is looking to stand up but Noel won't let him.
Owens not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Well Owens has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
