17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ante Gotovina! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Mauricio Rocha and Matheus Silva.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Steamboat fails with a takedown attempt. Steamboat throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Gotovina was covering up waiting for the punch and Steamboat finishes the takedown easily into guard. Steamboat lands a couple of elbows. Steamboat slips nicely into half guard. Gotovina won't allow Steamboat to pass to mount. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gotovina is controlling Steamboat's trapped leg to prevent Steamboat from advancing to side control. Gotovina trying to control here.
Steamboat thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Gotovina's head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gotovina is looking to control Steamboat's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Gotovina avoid being mounted? Gotovina moves into full guard.
Steamboat throws a big right hand that misses. Gotovina is controlling Steamboat's posture. Steamboat trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Gotovina is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Gotovina avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Steamboat throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Steamboat wants to pass the guard but Gotovina is keeping the position. That's four minutes gone in the round. Gotovina wants to hold on but Steamboat pushes him away. Gotovina is trying desperately to improve position. Steamboat landing punches. We've been hearing that Steamboat has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Steamboat lands a couple of good shots and Gotovina has given up his back, trying to escape the position! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Steamboat connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Gotovina to escape the position.
Steamboat missing with punches from the back. Steamboat punches Gotovina on the ear. Steamboat scores with some strikes to the side of the head there. Good, points scoring shots.
Gotovina is trying to get back to his feet but Steamboat has full control of the position and if anything, Gotovina has just worked his way into a worse spot. Steamboat scores with a nice shot to the head of his opponent. Gotovina is looking for a way out. Steamboat lands shots from the back.
Gotovina is rocked! Steamboat has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Gotovina covering up well and avoiding damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Ricky Steamboat dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Horrible takedown attempt by Steamboat or perhaps it was just good defense by Gotovina, which made it look bad. Gotovina throws a nice inside leg kick. Steamboat connects with a right that clearly hurt Gotovina. He's backed up against the cage with nowhere to go as Steamboat proceeds to tee off with vicious combinations till Gotovina collapses and taps out under the pressure!
