The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A punch combination from Giant misses. Higgens throws a hook but Giant avoids it easily. Higgens fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Higgens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Giant as he jumps to the side. Higgens misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. The Giant has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jerrod Higgens. Higgens shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Giant as he jumps to the side. Higgens looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Giant scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Higgens taking a bit of punishment here - Giant scoring with strikes. Higgens is looking for a sweep. Giant lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
It looks like Jerrod Higgens has been cut.
That's one minute gone in the round. Giant working the head with strikes. Giant landing strikes. Giant avoids the strikes from the bottom by Higgens. Higgens looks gassed! Giant decides to stand back up. Giant steps back and let's Higgens get back to his feet. Higgens doesn't succeed with the takedown and Giant counters with a shoot takedown. Higgens fights it but they end up in guard. Giant scores with a decent looking elbow strike. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Higgens looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Giant will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Giant postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Giant looking to pass the guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Giant throwing strikes from guard but Higgens blocks nicely. Giant wants to control from the top but Higgens keeps moving. Giant knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Higgens on the ground. Giant not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Giant trying to control the position from guard on top but Higgens is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Higgens doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Giant is stalling in the full guard. Higgens has momentary wrist control but Giant slips an elbow through the middle. Giant working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Higgens lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Giant! Giant is working to get back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Higgens trying to control but he's not successful this time. Giant flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Higgens moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Giant has worked his arm free - good work by Giant!
Higgens creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Giant sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Giant is trying to improve his position. Higgens is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Giant has escaped the position, nice work there. Higgens is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Giant is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Higgens wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Giant, who protects the arm well. Giant tries to strike from the bottom but misses. Higgens is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Giant is trying to escape and Higgens transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Giant is forced to tap! Nice work there by Higgens! Very nice indeed!
