Coming up we have a welterweight kickboxing rules bout between Cory McDonnell (ranked 21128 p4p, 973 weight class) and Fleece Johnson (ranked 19717 p4p, 918 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Cory McDonnell! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
20 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fleece Johnson! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Don Winkell and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnson throws an overhand right that lands on McDonnell's shoulder, as McDonnell tries to avoid the shot. A little feinted left hand from McDonnell on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Johnson throws an ugly left hook that misses
and McDonnell counters with a nice uppercut.
It looks like Fleece Johnson has been cut. McDonnell scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Johnson throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body. Nice defenses there by Johnson. Johnson works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. Johnson digs a good hook to McDonnell's body.
Johnson cracks McDonnell with a right hand to the side of the head. McDonnell walks into a straight right hand from Johnson. Johnson throws a lazy uppercut
and McDonnell counters with a straight right hand. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Johnson takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Johnson scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. McDonnell doesn't seem bothered though. McDonnell throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Johnson misses with a kick to the body.
Johnson scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Johnson misses with a right hand and McDonnell connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. McDonnell looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. McDonnell misses with a wild combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. McDonnell lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range. Johnson misses with a body kick. Johnson throws a sloppy head kick and McDonnell moves out of range easily. Johnson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but McDonnell manages to avoid it. Johnson throws a big shot that misses. Johnson throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Johnson closes the distance looking to clinch and McDonnell makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Johnson really felt that one! McDonnell throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Johnson on the side of the head. A nice leg kick lands there from Johnson. McDonnell cracks the inside of Johnson's front leg. McDonnell bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. McDonnell thows a left - swing and a miss!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Johnson misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from McDonnell.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Johnson shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. McDonnell lands with a slapping head kick. Johnson lands with a straight right. McDonnell didn't see that one coming. The fight stays on the outside here - Johnson looks like he's thinking about clinching though. McDonnell avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Johnson misses with a right hand and McDonnell counters with a nice leg kick. Johnson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Johnson lands a glancing blow to the side of McDonnell's head. Johnson connects with a solid leg kick. Johnson takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Johnson fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. McDonnell slips under a jab. Johnson looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Johnson tried to score with a low kick but McDonnell checks it. McDonnell takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Fleece Johnson dominated that round. The cut man is working on Fleece Johnson's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.
Johnson misses with an uppercut. McDonnell steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Johnson. Johnson changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Johnson tries to clinch but McDonnell moves out of range. Johnson bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of McDonnell's head. McDonnell is looking to land body kicks. Johnson looks to land a body kick but McDonnell moved away. Johnson throws a body kick that misses and McDonnell counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Johnson scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Johnson tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. McDonnell manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Johnson throws out a head kick that McDonnell doesn't see coming - it connects and sends McDonnell crashing to the mat face first! He's bounced up to his knees and is scrambling to get back to his feet and beat the count. He's up on 5 but still looks a bit groggy; will the referee allow it to continue??? He's taking a good look into McDonnell's eyes and has decided to let it go on!
McDonnell is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Johnson lands with an overhand left. Oh McDonnell is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Johnson is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. McDonnell walks straight into a perfectly timed right hook, crumpling him to the floor! McDonnell is in all kinds of trouble here - can he beat the count? 3,4,5,6,7,8,9....10 - he's out and it's by a long way too - he didn't ever look like beating that count!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:50 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punch). Fleece Johnson! Fleece Johnson retains his welterweight title! During a confident post fight interview, Fleece Johnson thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
