PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Benjamin Briggs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jake Rome (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jake Rome told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Benjamin Briggs!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jake Rome!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rome misses the shot to the body.
Rome ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Rome throws an overhand right that lands on Briggs's shoulder, as Briggs tries to avoid the shot.
Rome uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Briggs.
Briggs throws a big shot that misses.
Rome takes a swing at Briggs's ribcage but misses.

Briggs shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Briggs content to stall in guard here.

Briggs drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Rome manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Briggs has Rome in his guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rome looking to sit in guard and control but Briggs gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Briggs wants to lay and pray for a moment but Rome keeps working.
Briggs taking a break here but Rome is having none of it and regains half guard.
Rome is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Rome can do anything to dispel that myth.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Briggs not doing much here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Briggs missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Briggs throws a strike but Rome avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Briggs loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Rome looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Briggs throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Rome lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Briggs had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Rome defends it easily.

Briggs is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Briggs has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Rome not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Rome throws a front kick aimed at Briggs's knee but Briggs avoids it well.
A looping hook to the body misses from Briggs. Rome does a little dance to reset his feet.
Rome throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rome fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Briggs manages to avoid it.
Briggs attempts a counter takedown but Rome avoids it well and moves away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Briggs shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Briggs looks to score with a jab to the body but Rome is just out of range.
Rome throws a head kick that misses.
A counter left hand to the body from Briggs misses its target.
Rome tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Briggs was well out of range. Poor timing from Rome.
A quick step to the side and Briggs tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Briggs avoids the body shot from Rome.
Briggs attempts a counter takedown but Rome avoids it well and moves away.
Rome misses with a straight right.
Rome throws a body shot but no joy.
Rome throws a leg kick

and Briggs counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Rome!

Briggs thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Briggs tries to score with some ground and pound. Rome controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Briggs is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Rome can do to turn this around?

Rome is pressing down on Briggs's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Rome can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Briggs controls the pace.
Briggs content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Briggs accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Briggs stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rome swivels though and keeps the full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Rome looking to hit a scissor sweep but Briggs is one step ahead there.
Briggs trying to control the position from guard on top but Rome is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Rome tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Briggs is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Briggs checks the leg kick nicely there.
Briggs swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Briggs throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Briggs keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Rome uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Briggs.

Rome ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Briggs moves away.
Rome tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Briggs was well out of range. Poor timing from Rome.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Briggs checks a leg kick.
Rome is breathing heavily.

Briggs looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Rome!
Briggs is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Rome sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.

Briggs wants to take a breather but Rome is having none of it.
Briggs thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Rome's head.
Briggs seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Briggs seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Rome does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Rome is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Briggs scores with a couple of nice shots.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Rome just misses with a punch to the body.
Briggs throwing a counter right hand but Rome manages to avoid it.

Briggs is looking to wear down Rome with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Briggs throws a body punch but Rome moves out of range.
Briggs ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Rome moves away.
Rome does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Rome misses with a hook. Briggs ducked under it nicely.
Rome misses with a low kick.
Briggs uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rome.
Jake Rome seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Briggs bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Briggs is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Rome's shoulder. That is not cool.
Rome wants to control but Briggs postures up.
Rome takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Briggs throwing strikes but Rome manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
Briggs gets back to half guard.
Briggs is trying to maintain the position but Rome is very close to passing his half guard.
Rome trying to mount his opponent but Briggs defends it.

Rome wants to lay and pray for a moment but Briggs keeps working.
Ground and pound from Rome.
Briggs tries to roll over but Rome keeps him under control.
Rome not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Rome passes into side control, despite Briggs's attempt to control the position.
Briggs tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
You can see the frustration on Briggs's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Rome trying to control the action but Briggs is working from the bottom.
Rome might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Briggs haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Briggs is letting Rome control him for a moment.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Briggs moves out of range as Rome strikes.
A clash of legs there as Briggs blocks the low kick.
Jake Rome seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Briggs gets a takedown into half guard.
Briggs not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Briggs wants to control but Rome is keeping him busy.
Rome tries to get to full guard but Briggs has control of the leg.

Benjamin Briggs showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Briggs, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Benjamin Briggs decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
