The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidt closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Washington is positioning himself well to prevent Schmidt advancing to mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Schmidt thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Schmidt could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Washington is controlling Schmidt's trapped leg to prevent Schmidt from advancing to side control.

Let's hope that Washington has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Schmidt has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Washington is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Schmidt rolls with it to try and escape but Washington cranks on the arm and Schmidt is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
