PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Elvin Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Mize (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Elvin Patton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nathan Mize!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Gwen Towbar and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mize decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Mize looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Mize slows the pace down in half guard.
Mize works his way into full mount!
Mize throwing strikes here but Patton is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mize lands a big elbow.
Mize controlling his opponent.

Let's hope that Mize has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Patton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Mize throwing strikes here but Patton is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Mize wants to take his opponent's back but Patton doesn't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mize unloads with some shots from mount but Patton bucks and avoids them well.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mize controlling the pace for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mize sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!

Mize working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mize looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Patton tries to hold on but Mize postures up.
Mize punching from mount but Patton doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Mize throws some wild stikes that Patton manages to avoid easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Mize goes for an armbar but Patton turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Patton.
Mize should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Mize is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

Mize uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Mize throws a sloppy head kick and Patton moves out of range easily.
As Mize tries to get set, Patton tries to push him back and clinch up but Mize manages to avoid the attempt.

Mize feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mize loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Mize not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Mize moves into the clinch successfully.
Mize just leaning against Patton, taking a breather.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.

Mize drags the fight down to the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mize avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Patton throwing strikes but missing.
Mize throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.

Mize is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.


Mize postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Patton to stand up.

Nathan Mize has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mize is pulling down on Patton's head. It's preventing any offense from Patton, at least for the moment.

Hammerfist, elbow! yells Patton's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Patton has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Patton is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Patton throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Mize works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Mize is looking to stand up but Patton isn't so interested in that idea.

Mize is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Patton defends well.

Patton trying to control but Mize is working from the bottom.
Patton keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Mize's head.
Patton connects with a couple of short punches.
Mize is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Patton throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Mize feints and as Patton raises his hands in defense, Mize changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Patton will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Mize postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Patton is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mize, into his guard.

Mize avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Mize preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nathan Mize showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Patton gets caught flat footed, as Mize shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Patton has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mize is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Mize manages to pull guard.

Patton got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mize has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Patton has managed to get both his arms back between Mize's legs - danger averted.

Mize looking for a sweep. Not yet Mize, not yet.
Patton throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mize is on top in guard.

Patton is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Mize sitting in guard, not really doing much.

Mize is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Patton is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Patton has escaped and now he's on top!

Mize escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Patton gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Mize has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Patton has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Mize manages to break the clinch.

Mize scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Mize takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Mize stands up from half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mize clinches with his opponent.
A body shot lands from Mize.
Mize has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Mize has Patton pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Mize pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Patton tumbling to the mat - Mize dives into Patton's guard.

Patton is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
Nathan Mize comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Mize has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
