PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Bob Nastanovich (ranked 23262 p4p, 904 weight class) and Wilson Carlos (ranked 22419 p4p, 893 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Carlos's choice of entrance music: sujou meu pau foi de coco. Bob Nastanovich could well score a knockout today. He has the power to get to Wilson Carlos's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bob Nastanovich!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Wilson Carlos!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Tarja Halkonen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nastanovich shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Nastanovich looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Nastanovich is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Nastanovich not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Nastanovich throwing shots but Carlos is blocking nicely.
Nastanovich prevents Carlos from standing back up.
Carlos wants to get back to full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Nastanovich connects with a nice short shot to Carlos's temple.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Carlos regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Nastanovich.
Carlos keeping moving, preventing Nastanovich from controlling successfully.

Nastanovich won't allow Carlos to get back to his feet.
Carlos is trying to control the position but Nastanovich postures up.
Nastanovich wants to pass the guard but Carlos is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nastanovich cracks Carlos with a solid left hand.
Nastanovich wants to control from the top but Carlos keeps moving.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Nastanovich tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Carlos defends well and Nastanovich ends up having to push Carlos into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Carlos misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Carlos looks to land a combination but Nastanovich avoids it well.

Carlos throws a nice looking combination but Nastanovich bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Nastanovich fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Carlos sprawls well initially but Nastanovich persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Carlos pushes Nastanovich off and gets back to his feet.
Carlos throws a head kick but Nastanovich moves out of range.
Some wild striking there from Carlos.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Carlos gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Nastanovich to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Nastanovich won't allow Carlos to get back to his feet.
Nastanovich sitting in guard, not really doing much.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Nastanovich landing with the ground and pound.
Nastanovich throwing strikes from guard but Carlos blocks nicely.
Nastanovich stands up over Carlos, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Nastanovich controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Carlos wants to stand up but Nastanovich is controlling him.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Nastanovich's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Nastanovich has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Nastanovich throwing strikes but missing.
Carlos is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Nastanovich wants to control from the top but Carlos keeps moving.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nastanovich is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Bob Nastanovich will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Nastanovich slips a jab and a cross from Carlos.
A head kick from Carlos lands but Nastanovich takes it in his stride.


It looks like Bob Nastanovich has been cut.
No joy there for Carlos, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Carlos shoots in for a takedown but Nastanovich shows good takedown defense.
Wilson Carlos seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Carlos lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Nastanovich looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Nastanovich gets the takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Nastanovich is putting a hurting on Carlos here, landing some big shots from side control.
Carlos is trying to escape the position but Nastanovich is controlling the position.
Nastanovich has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Bob Nastanovich overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The referee asks Nastanovich politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Nastanovich prefers to stall for the moment though.
Nastanovich scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Carlos to see if he's OK.
Carlos really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nastanovich. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Nastanovich is working Carlos over with some ground and pound from side control.
Nastanovich in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows.

Carlos tries to bench press Nastanovich off him but Nastanovich keeps the position.
Carlos felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Carlos takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Carlos pushes Nastanovich away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Nastanovich gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Carlos is looking to reverse the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Nastanovich shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Carlos is trying to defend but Nastanovich finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Carlos is looking to get back to is feet but Nastanovich passes into side control.
Carlos bucks up and tries to throw Nastanovich off but instead Nastanovich has got his back!

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Carlos throws a head kick but Nastanovich moves out of range.

Nastanovich shoots in and bounces Carlos off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Nastanovich wants to control from the top but Carlos keeps moving.

Carlos kicks Nastanovich off and gets to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Carlos fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Nastanovich appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Nastanovich shoots in but Carlos avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Carlos lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Nastanovich circles away quickly and effectively.
Carlos misses with a double jab.
Nastanovich was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

Nice sprawl there from Carlos as Nastanovich shoots in.
Carlos scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Wilson Carlos is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Carlos will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Nastanovich closes this distance looking for a takedown but Carlos circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bob Nastanovich. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Nastanovich drives through and clinches with Carlos against the cage.
Carlos is pressed up against the cage. Nastanovich has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Carlos down to the mat. Carlos avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Nastanovich has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Nastanovich lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Carlos throws a nice looking combination but Nastanovich bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Nastanovich attempts a counter takedown but Carlos avoids it well and moves away.

so Nastanovich counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Nastanovich is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Nastanovich advances to half guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Nastanovich keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Nastanovich's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
