PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Ricky Pope (ranked 25432 p4p, 0 weight class) and Blazing Bob (ranked 25713 p4p, 0 weight class). Bob has chosen Born to be wild as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. The key to victory for Ricky Pope has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Ricky Pope!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Blazing Bob!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pope fails with the takedown.

Bob closes the distance and clinches.
A short right from Bob on the inside.
A right hook to the body lands for Bob.
Bob tries for a takedown but Pope manages to get underhooks.
Pope on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bob misses with a knee to the head.

Bob pulls Pope into guard.
Bob bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Pope's guard.


That's one minute gone in the round.
Pope keeping moving, preventing Bob from controlling successfully.
Bob connects with a couple of short punches.
Bob trying to control the position from guard on top but Pope is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pope lands with a heel strike from the guard.
My spies in CT + BJJ & Wrestling & Boxing & MT SPARRING GYM inform me that Bob has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Pope really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Pope wants to sweep but no luck.

Bob postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Pope is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Bob, into his guard.

Bob is looking to stand up but Pope isn't so interested in that idea.

Pope tries to free his leg and advance position but Bob is retaining full guard.
Bob pulls Pope in close to prevent any damage.
Pope slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Bob manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pope manages to get himself to full guard.


That's three minutes gone in the round.

Pope is working an open guard so Bob takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Good work by Pope as he checks the leg kick.
Bob shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
letting Pope counter with a right hand.

Bob moves into the clinch.

Bob jumps guard and drags Pope to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Pope seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bob is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Bob working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Pope pushes Bob off looking to stand but Bob dives back in and keeps control.
Bob landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pope is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Bob scores with a couple of nice shots.
Bob working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.


Pope is rocked!
Bob content to control rather than advance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Blazing Bob dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Bob shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Pope counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Oh Pope is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Bob throws a sloppy head kick and Pope moves out of range easily.
Pope seems to have got his legs back now.
Bob throws a series of punches but Pope moves out of range.
A quick step to the side and Pope tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Bob throws a combination that misses
and Pope counters with a stiff right hand.
Pope uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Bob.
Pope tries to counter by clinching up but Bob breaks away and moves out of range.

Bob clinches up with Pope and pushes him back against the cage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Bob ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Bob no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Pope trying to stand up but can't free himself from Bob's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pope lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Pope will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Bob pulls Pope in to control the position.
Pope stays in close to Bob's body and controls the position.
Pope has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Pope wants to control from the top but Bob keeps moving.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Bob looking for a sweep. Not yet Bob, not yet.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Pope clinches with his opponent.

Bob ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Bob no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Bob looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pope is one step ahead there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pope wants to stand and escape but instead Bob has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.


That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pope manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Bob manages to get himself to full guard.

Bob looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Bob wants to control the position but Pope says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Pope prevents Bob from improving his position.
Pope is taking a breather. Bob says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Bob moves into full guard.
Bob looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Bob has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Pope wants to control from the top but Bob keeps moving.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Blazing Bob will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!



Pope shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Bob's guard.

Pope trying to remain calm as Bob controls from the top position.
Pope tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
BOOM! Bob connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Blazing Bob has got the better of the ground game so far.
Bob lands with some strikes.
Bob postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Pope in real trouble here! The ref calls for Pope to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Blazing Bob!
