PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jarkko Kilpi (ranked 4646 p4p, 518 weight class) and Simbo Klice (ranked 2512 p4p, 308 weight class). Kilpi comes into the arena with Solid Base - I Like It blaring out of the sound system. Klice has chosen THE D.O.C. - it's funky enough as his entrance music. Simbo Klice is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jarkko Kilpi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Simbo Klice!
The judges for this bout are Matti Vanhoillinen, Ben Zyskovitsi and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kilpi keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Klice misses with a body shot.
Some wild striking there from Klice.
Klice tries to bum rush Kilpi with a series of wild strikes but Kilpi uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Klice throws a body shot but no joy.
Kilpi shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Klice pinned against the cage. Klice gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kilpi shoots in looking for a takedown but Klice manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Kilpi's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Klice misses with a straight left.
Kilpi has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Kilpi takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.


It looks like Jarkko Kilpi has been cut.

Kilpi gets the takedown into side control.
Kilpi trying to control the position but Klice is working away.
Klice is looking to regain half guard here but Kilpi keeps moving and retains side control.
Klice is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Klice felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kilpi tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Klice is trying to get back to half guard.
Klice manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Klice throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Kilpi wants to control but Klice is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Kilpi tries to roll over but Klice keeps him under control.
Kilpi is pressing down on Klice's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Klice avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Kilpi has his foot on Klice's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Klice works his way back into a safe position though.

Kilpi is looking for a triangle but Klice pushes his legs off easily.
Klice must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Klice is looking to work some ground and pound but Kilpi has wrist control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Klice lands a couple of elbows.

Klice stands up over Kilpi, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

Kilpi is looking for a triangle here but Klice uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.

Klice throws a strike aimed at the side of Kilpi's head but Kilpi avoids it well.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Kilpi tries to bench press Klice off him but Klice keeps the position.
Klice cracks Kilpi with a big elbow.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Klice looks to throw the jab but Kilpi is out of range.

Jarkko Kilpi's cut is getting worse.
Kilpi does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Klice throws an overhand right that lands on Kilpi's shoulder, as Kilpi tries to avoid the shot.
Klice misses with a body shot.
Kilpi avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kilpi seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kilpi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Kilpi attempts a counter takedown but Klice avoids it well and moves away.
Klice avoids the body shot from Kilpi.

Klice leaves Kilpi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Klice misses with a takedown attempt - Kilpi sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Kilpi feinted with a counter takedown.
Kilpi displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Klice.
Kilpi tries to counter with a takedown but Klice is quick to defend against it.
Jarkko Kilpi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Simbo Klice.

Kilpi darts in looking for a takedown but Klice gets double underhooks and turns Kilpi into the cage.

Kilpi controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Kilpi passes Klice's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Kilpi wants to free his trapped foot but Klice is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Kilpi uses his free foot to push down on Klice's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Klice.

Jarkko Kilpi overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kilpi has hold of Klice's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Klice manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jarkko Kilpi will probably get the nod.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Klice swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Klice takes a swing at Kilpi's ribcage but misses.
Kilpi changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Kilpi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Klice sprawls well. Klice wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kilpi gets slowly back to his feet.
Klice looks to land a left hand but Kilpi moved out of range nicely.
Klice misses with a double jab

so Kilpi counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Klice controls Kilpi momentarily but Kilpi frees himself.

Kilpi goes for an armbar but Klice turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Klice.

Klice chips away with some ground and pound.
Klice engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Klice in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Kilpi is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Klice defends well.
Klice postures up and lands a big shot to Kilpi's brow.

Kilpi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Klice doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Klice manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Klice throws an elbow that misses. Kilpi uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Klice's guard. Nice move by Kilpi!
