PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Damien Law (ranked 23804 p4p, 476 weight class) and Rafael Mendes (ranked 4318 p4p, 210 weight class). Rafael Mendes told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Damien Law!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Tarja Halkonen and Anni Minnemäki.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Law moves into the clinch.
Mendes tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Law gets control of Mendes's arms and successfully pulls guard. Law will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Mendes working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Law controls Mendes momentarily but Mendes frees himself.
Mendes advances to half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Law wants to control but Mendes is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Mendes is taking a breather. Law says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Law shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mendes sprawls well. Mendes wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Law gets slowly back to his feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Law shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mendes defends it nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Damien Law. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Mendes is definitely looking for the counter takedowns here.

Law throws a strike but Mendes rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Mendes has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Law tries to lock up and control but Mendes gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Law might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Law prevents Mendes from taking his back.

Law has given up his back here. Will Mendes look for the submission or keep pounding away?
Law is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Mendes.
You can see the frustration on Law's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Mendes shoots in for a double leg but Law sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Law appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Mendes stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mendes wants it to stay on the feet.

Mendes wants to take his opponent's back but Law doesn't allow it.
Law on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Law tries to get out of the position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Law really wants to buck Mendes off and get back to his feet.
Mendes content just to control the position here.
Rafael Mendes has got the better of the ground game so far.

Mendes keeps control of the position as Law tries to break free.
Mendes is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.
Mendes has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mendes controlling the position well here. Law rolled but Mendes kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Rafael Mendes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Law is fighting to break Mendes's control of his arms but Mendes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Mendes slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Mendes's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Law has scooted to the edge of the canvas and used the cage to get back to his feet. Mendes has stuck on his opponent and is forcing him back against the cage.

Law drags the fight down to the ground.

Law working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mendes doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mendes manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Law wants to control the position but Mendes says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.

Law tries to control Mendes's body but Mendes pushes him off. Law squirms to his side and now Mendes has his back!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

I would just about give that final round to Rafael Mendes.
I've got Mendes winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
