PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jonas Hawkins (ranked 6532 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pete Tromet (ranked 6768 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jonas Hawkins!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pete Tromet!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Daniel Franklin and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Tromet fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Hawkins looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Tromet is fending him off so far but Hawkins persists. Nope, Tromet circles away and we're back to standing.
A bone on bone clash there as Hawkins blocks the leg kick.

Tromet shoots in and gets a takedown into Hawkins's guard.
Tromet engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Tromet landing with the ground and pound.

Tromet trying to control the position from guard on top but Hawkins is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Tromet throws an elbow that misses. Hawkins uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Tromet's guard. Nice move by Hawkins!

Hawkins wants to stand and escape but instead Tromet has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Hawkins keeping full guard, as Tromet tries to pass.
Hawkins wants to stand but Tromet is controlling the position.
Hawkins wants to sweep here but Tromet controlling him for the moment.
Tromet is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Tromet drops back looking for a leg! Hawkins is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hawkins manages to kick Tromet off! Tromet jumps back into Hawkins's guard.
Hawkins will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Tromet forces his way into half guard.

Hawkins kicks Tromet off and gets back to his feet.
Hawkins defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Tromet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Tromet gets underhooks to prevent Hawkins's takedown attempt.

Hawkins tries to throw a body punch but Tromet avoids it by throwing Hawkins back against the cage.

Hawkins keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Jonas Hawkins has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Pete Tromet.

Tromet moves into range and clinches up with Hawkins.
Hawkins lands an elbow just above Tromet 's eye.
Hawkins wants a takedown.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Pete Tromet will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Tromet defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Hawkins.
Tromet is trying hard to land a takedown here. Hawkins sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Tromet clinches up against the cage.
Hawkins misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Tromet.
Hawkins jumps guard but Tromet turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Hawkins dodges an elbow strike from Tromet.

Tromet escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Tromet closes the distance and clinches.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jonas Hawkins. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hawkins can't get the takedown.

Tromet jumps guard and drags Hawkins to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Tromet is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Hawkins really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Hawkins has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Tromet is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Hawkins lands a couple of digs.

Tromet is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Tromet has a closed guard, preventing Hawkins from standing up.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Hawkins's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Tromet seems keen to control Hawkins's posture.
Hawkins is in close to Tromet's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Hawkins tries to stand but Tromet is controlling from the bottom.
Hawkins won't allow Tromet to sweep him here.
Tromet controls Hawkins momentarily but Hawkins frees himself.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Tromet pulls Hawkins in to control the position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Tromet fails with a takedown attempt.
Tromet is breathing heavily.

Hawkins shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Tromet sprawls well. Tromet wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Hawkins gets slowly back to his feet.
Tromet tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hawkins sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Tromet somewhat.

Tromet is keen to just control but Hawkins is a slippery customer.
Hawkins is trying to maintain the position but Tromet is very close to passing his half guard.

Hawkins pulls Tromet in close to his closed guard and prevents Tromet from doing any damage or advancing position.

Pete Tromet showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Tromet decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Hawkins manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Tromet keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.
Hawkins goes for a takedown in the clinch but Tromet prevents it.

Tromet lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.

Tromet breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Tromet changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Hawkins tries to avoid it but Tromet manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Hawkins to the ground. Hawkins escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tromet leaves Hawkins with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Hawkins changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Tromet tries to avoid it but Hawkins manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Tromet to the ground. Tromet escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Tromet takes the fight into the clinch.
Hawkins is trying to drag Tromet to the mat but Tromet just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Tromet has Hawkins pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Tromet pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hawkins tumbling to the mat - Tromet dives into Hawkins's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Tromet wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hawkins keeps working.

Pete Tromet is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
